The last couple of weeks have seen a lot of discussion, debate, and speculation around the goalkeeping department at Bayern Munich. It all started with Manuel Neuer’s poor mistakes against Augsburg, which saw Die Roten concede inside ten seconds of the game.

Neuer suffered a foot injury that kept him out of the next two games. Jonas Urbig played in the goal against Viking and RB Leipzig. Viking ended up securing a point against Bayern in the Champions League in a high-scoring game, but the team managed to bounce back with a 6-1 win against Leipzig.

Reports in Germany have suggested that this is likely to be Neuer’s last season for Bayern. The club chiefs are confident that Urbig can become Neuer's long-term successor.

However, the Bavarian club will need a strong backup to Urbig since Sven Ulreich is also expected to retire at the end of the season. Die Roten have been linked with several goalkeepers during the international break for the number two position.

According to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg (via iMiaSanMia), Bayern have now been offered the chance to sign Fabian Bredlow from VfB Stuttgart next summer. The 31-year-old goalkeeper will be a free agent at the end of the season if he doesn’t sign a new contract with Stuttgart.

Bayern considering several options for the number two position

Bredlow is likely to be one of several options for Bayern next summer. They have been heavily linked with Fulham shot-stopper Bernd Leno and Mainz goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.

Die Roten effectively want a goalkeeper who can bring experience and be content with being a number two behind Urbig. They need to settle in quickly whenever called upon to start in goal.

Dahmen is 28 and part of the German national team, so a move to Bayern wouldn’t make sense for the player if he wants regular game time. Bredlow and Leno are in their 30s, so a move to Munich as a number two would suit them at this stage of their career. Bayern are likely to formalise their top target at the end of the season.

For now, Bayern fans and chiefs will hope Neuer recovers from the latest setback to have a good season. It will be fitting if Neuer ends his time at Bayern by winning all trophies. In the meantime, Bayern will also look to give Urbig adequate game time in the presence of Neuer to ensure he is well prepared to become the number one next season.
