Bayern Munich news: club president refuses to rule out Erling Haaland move
Amid Manchester City's financial scandal, Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has addressed the possibility of signing Erling Haaland.
The Norwegian could be one of numerous stars to leave the Sky Blues if the club face forced relegation over their many breaches. Man City have appealed against the independent commission's ruling, but the complexity of the case means a decision is not expected soon.
With Bayern's attack already packed with talent, Hainer sees no need for a move on Haaland's scale right now. "We have an excellent attack with Michael Olise, Harry Kane and Luis Díaz. We scored over 100 goals last year and are extremely well equipped in attack," he told Bild TV when asked whether Haaland would be an option if his club received a severe punishment.
Hainer did not rule out Haaland moving to Säbener Straße further down the line. "If we're talking about a time a few years from now, we would look at the situation again," he explained. According to recent reports in Spanish media, Barcelona and Real Madrid have already approached the goalscorer.
Under contract in Manchester until 2034, Haaland has attracted strong interest from Bayern on several occasions. The club were keen around Robert Lewandowski's departure for Barcelona in 2022. They had also shown interest when Haaland was scoring goals for Molde FK in his homeland from 2017 to 2019, before the now 26-year-old moved via RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund to Man City in 2022.
For now, Kane leads Bayern's attack and probably remains their future at centre-forward. His contract expires in summer 2027, and Bayern are expected to extend it soon.
Bayern Munich news: former player Jürgen Kohler doubts Jonas Urbig is ready
Jürgen Kohler, who played for Bayern Munich from 1989 to 1991, has argued in his kicker column that it is too soon for heir apparent Jonas Urbig to replace Manuel Neuer.
"I don't think Jonas Urbig is ready to replace Neuer immediately. He is a good goalkeeper, but also a young one who still has several areas to work on," wrote the 1996 European champion. Kohler believes the 23-year-old has plenty of quality and talent but still lacks experience. "Neuer, too, made mistakes when he was young and only developed a certain maturity and an excellent reputation through many appearances."
At the weekend, Neuer was at fault for at least one goal in the 2-2 draw against FC Augsburg. "Over the course of the season, he will continue to perform at a high level, even if it is no longer the very highest level at which he set the standard," Kohler stressed. "With a player of his calibre, mistakes particularly stand out and stay in the memory."
After this season, Neuer is expected to end his career, as he has suggested several times in recent weeks. Urbig is regarded as his designated successor. As he did last season, the former Cologne player is getting regular playing time to prepare him to succeed the long-serving number one. He is also already being tipped to become Germany's first-choice goalkeeper.
