Bayern Munich draw in spectacular derby after Manuel Neuer mistakes and four disallowed goals
Bayern Munich failed to beat FC Augsburg on Saturday. Manuel Neuer took centre stage in the Bavarian derby for all the wrong reasons with his blunder for the 1-0, the fastest Bundesliga goal ever, and his mistake for the 2-1. Bayern had four goals ruled out for offside but, thanks to strikes from Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, still avoided defeat. They now sit two points behind leaders Dortmund, who also drew 2-2 on Friday.
Saibari started as Bayern's number 10. The former PSV player lined up behind striker Harry Kane and between wingers Michael Olise and Luis Díaz. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw was on the bench for the home side.
Nothing could have gone worse for Bayern at the start. Neuer received the ball straight from kick-off but miscontrolled it and flicked it against Robin Fellhauer. The German then smashed into an empty net after six seconds, making it the fastest Bundesliga goal ever.
Bayern had to chase the game straight away and created plenty of chances, especially through Kane, though his finishing was not quite there yet. Augsburg barely threatened Neuer after the 1-0, although Fellhauer did send a volley over the bar.
Then Augsburg spurned by far their biggest chance of the match. Juma Bah missed from close range at the far post after a fine cut-back from Chrislain Matsima. Soon after, Josip Stanisic found Saibari, who dragged wide when he was one-on-one with goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.
Five minutes after the break, Bayern thought they had equalised when Díaz scored with a brilliant volley after some fumbling from Dahmen. VAR ruled it out, though, because Stanisic was marginally offside in the build-up.
They did not have to wait long for the leveller. Just after that disallowed goal, Kane fed Saibari, who made the space with an excellent first touch and beat Dahmen with a clinical finish into the near corner: 1-1.
Still, Bayern's control made Augsburg's sudden 2-1 even more surprising. Calvin Brackelmann got a shot away that Neuer gathered unconvincingly. The rebound dropped to Rodrigo Ribeiro, who poked home: 2-2.
Offside kept getting in Bayern's way. Olise sent Kane through and he teed up substitute Serge Gnabry for what looked like the equaliser, only for Kane to be flagged offside. A few minutes later, another goal was chalked off when Díaz scored from an Alphonso Davies assist, but Davies had gone just too early.
At last, the 2-2 arrived ten minutes from time when Kane's sharp low cross was turned in at the far post by summer signing Brown. Gnabry should have made it 2-3 from a similar chance but slid the ball against the post. In stoppage time he did find the net, only for a fourth Bayern goal to be ruled out for offside.
