3 winners and 2 losers from Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 win over Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal
Borussia Dortmund moved into the DFB-Pokal Round of 16 after beating Werder Bremen 3-2 in stoppage-time. A second-half double from Niclas Fullkrug had canceled out goals from Serhou Guirassy and Carney Chukwuemeka, but Marcel Sabitzer won it for the BVB with a sensational free-kick in the dying seconds.
Here are the 3 winners and 2 losers from Borussia Dortmund's 3-2 win over Werder Bremen:
Winner #1 - Marcel Sabitzer
Who could have seen this coming? Marcel Sabitzer had long been written off by the fans for his underwhelming displays this season. But the Austrian decided to prove he still has it in him to deliver, and let rip an unstoppable free-kick into the near post to send Dortmund through with his first goal of the season.
Loser #1 - Julian Ryerson
Yes, he assisted the opening goal for Serhou Guirassy. But that was as good as it got for Julian Ryerson, who was consistently found out defensively. Marco Grull had a gala time exploiting the space on the left whilst also conceding a penalty to Bremen which sparked their comeback into the contest.
Winner #2 - Jobe Bellingham
Jobe Bellingham is on fire right now. Over the last three games, he's been excellent going forward, setting up a brilliant chance for Fabio Silva against Sabah FK, assisting Maximilian Beier for his winner against Eintracht Frankfurt, and now teeing up Carney Chukwuemeka for 2-0 against Werder Bremen. His ability to find spaces and make a pass is brilliant, and tracks back effectively when Dortmund are on the backfoot.
Loser #2 - Felix Nmecha
While he wasn't particularly disappointing, the German midfielder left a lot to be desired with his finishing. He fired one into stands in the first half before scuffing a shot narrowly wide in the second after being set up by Maximilian Beier. It says a lot when his best contribution in the game was winning the free-kick that led to Sabitzer's winner. Maybe, it's time for Kovac to drop Nmecha and reorganize his midfield.
Winner #3 - Serhou Guirassy
Another cup game, another goal from Serhou Guirassy. The prolific striker made a close-range finish in the sixth minute after Ryerson teed him up inside the box. He also set up Chukwuemeka in the second half for a potential tap-in, but the Austrian failed to connect with it. More importantly though, his goal would boost his confidence ahead of their lip-smacking showdown with Bayern Munich on Saturday.
