10 key stats from Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 win over Sabah
Borussia Dortmund cut themselves some slack with a 2-1 win over Sabah FK in the Champions League on Tuesday. Prolific striker Serhou Guirassy netted both their goals on the night as the BVB won their first game of the month.
It was a much-improved attacking game from the Bundesliga side, who mustered four shots on target in the opening 15 minutes of the match, including Guirassy's 10th-minute opener when he bundled the ball home after Sabah goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov spilled Felix Nmecha's shot.
Aden McCarthy restored parity for the Owls in the 39th minute with a header off a free-kick from Tymoteusz Puchacz, although Guirassy restored Dortmund's lead eight minutes into the second half with a delicate chip to bury Joey Veerman's perfectly-weighted cross inside the box.
Sabah kept pushing for a second goal and managed to find a few openings too, but the final ball was lacking as Dortmund nervously saw out the final few minutes to clinch all three points. Here are 10 key stats from the match:
1) The match ends Borussia Dortmund's three-game winless run in all competitions this month.
2) Serhou Guirassy's brace was his second in the Champions League this season, having netted twice against Villarreal on matchday one too; it also ends his five-game scoreless run for the side.
3) Borussia Dortmund are the first team in Europe to beat Sabah FK on their home turf this season; the Owls had won all five previous matches in their backyard, including four in the qualifiers.
4) The win keeps Borussia Dortmund's 100% record against teams from Azerbaijan intact, extending it to five in five now; the BVB had previously beaten Qarabag and Gabala twice each.
5) Joey Veerman now has three assists for Borussia Dortmund, one each in the Bundesliga, the DFB Pokal and now the Champions League.
6) Tonight's win also halts Borussia Dortmund's losing streak away from home in the Champions League at four; they had previously lost to Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and lately, Bodo/Glimt on the road.
7) Serhou Guirassy has bagged five goals in his last five Champions League games with Borussia Dortmund.
8) For the second year running, Borussia Dortmund have failed to keep a clean sheet in their opening three Champions League fixtures; they previously conceded against Villarreal (2) and Bodo/Glimt (1).

10) The win was Borussia Dortmund's seventh in 11 official games of the 2026-27 season thus far, having lost only two.
