Liverpool manager Arne Slot has offered to resign from the club at the end of the season, according to insider account Indy Kaila.
Slot has been under increasing pressure of late at Liverpool. After winning the Premier League in his first season, being 21 points off the top with seven games to play this term is not a good follow-up.
The Reds were mauled in the FA Cup quarter-final by Manchester City, a game in which it was felt they gave up, and while they're in the quarters of the Champions League, they'll be hard pressed to beat holders Paris Saint-Germain, who hammered Chelsea 8-2 on aggregate in the previous round.
A loss there would see Liverpool left with nothing to play for this season and pressure would continue to build for Slot.
But that pressure might mean nothing, as insider account Indy Kaila states he is ready to make the decision to step away himself.
It's stated the Liverpool boss has 'offered to step down at the end of the season with a package on the right terms.'
Slot is currently under contract with Liverpool until the summer of 2027, so it would not be a huge payout were Liverpool to part company with him.
Many reports have suggested former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso is waiting in the wings to take over from Slot after he left Real Madrid this season, and his presence could give Liverpool the push to accept their current manager's resignation.
Alonso waiting for Liverpool job
Keith Wyness has told Football Insider he's learned that Alonso is indeed ready to take the reins at Anfield.
He said: “I know that there are two things that a lot of my Liverpool friends and contacts are certainly moaning about Arne Slot just now.
“There’s been a real lack of belief. The Liverpool fan base, while they don’t want to go public with it, are certainly unhappy with the way the team’s been playing and performing.
“And Xabi Alonso, from my point of view and my contacts in Spain are saying that, yes, he would be the one in waiting to come back.”
There have been reports of late about what players Alonso would like to sign should he take the Liverpool job, with Real Madrid attacker Arda Guler one of the most intriguing potential additions given the Spaniard would have to raid his former club to make that signing.
