Can Harry Kane win the Ballon d'Or Next Week?

With the end of October approaching, the new football season may have been underway for only a couple of months, meaning any major silverware is still a long way from being handed out to deserving recipients.

However, October also marks the arrival of another familiar fixture in the football calendar: awards season. With the 2026 Ballon d’Or set to be handed out next week, speculation is intensifying over who will claim one of the game’s most prestigious individual honours.

With so many candidates able to make their case across different positions, putting together a definitive ranking is far from straightforward. For example, comparing a defender's contribution with a forward's goalscoring exploits presents an obvious challenge.

Midfielders pose a different problem. Their influence cannot always be captured by traditional measures such as goals and assists, particularly when their primary responsibilities involve controlling the game, winning possession and protecting the defence.

Our Power Rankings use individual output as the primary marker. Goals, assists, overall goal contributions and creative production provide a common foundation for comparison, with efficiency and the wider context helping to shape the final order.

Ultimately, no single statistic can tell the whole story, but together they offer a useful starting point for assessing the leading candidates. With that in mind, here is the current top 10 in our LiveScore Ballon d’Or Power Rankings.

(All stats are across club and country records combined)

10. Lautaro Martínez

Lautaro Martínez has once again shown why he belongs among the most dangerous strikers in world football. The Inter forward finished with 30 goals and 10 assists in 55 appearances for both club and country, delivering 40 goal contributions across the campaign.

The Argentine’s output was instrumental in helping Inter claim the Serie A title, with the trophy arriving at the blue-and-black half of the San Siro just a few months ago. Although he may not boast the headline figures of some of the names above him, consistent goalscoring and success at domestic level make him a worthy opening addition to our top 10.

9. Bruno Fernandes

Across 2026, Bruno Fernandes has undoubtedly been the creative heartbeat of Manchester United, producing 13 goals and 25 assists in 51 appearances. That said, his 38 goal contributions tell only part of the story, with his remarkable tally of 182 chances created revealing just how often he puts teammates in positions to score.

Fernandes’ output has also helped drive United back into the Champions League places, while his newly earned record of 21 assists in the Premier League last season further underlines the Portuguese midfielder’s influence. He might not match the leading forwards for goals, but his ability to unlock opposition defences gives him a compelling case for ninth place.

8. Ousmane Dembélé

Ousmane Dembélé has added end product to the explosive attacking qualities that have always made him such a threat. His 26 goals and 14 assists across last season’s 51 appearances amount to 40 goal contributions, while a 22% conversion rate shows that he has made his chances count.

Winning the Champions League for a second successive year only strengthens the French forward’s credentials, and last year’s award winner has combined individual productivity with the sort of European success that can define a Ballon d’Or campaign. He may not get close to a second successive Golden Ball, but he certainly deserves a high ranking on our list.

7. Luis Díaz

Luis Díaz delivered a season packed with attacking intent, recording 30 goals and 23 assists in 66 appearances for Bayern Munich. His 53 goal contributions make the Colombian one of the most productive players in this ranking, with his direct running and willingness to take on defenders giving his side a constant threat.

His contribution to Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga triumph and Champions League semi-final run also adds another dimension to his case for personal honours. The former Liverpool man has shown he can make a difference in a team competing for major honours, and his combination of goals, assists and team success puts him seventh in our rankings.

6. Michael Olise

One position above Diaz is his teammate Michael Olise, with the Bayern star quietly assembling one of the most impressive attacking records among this year’s candidates. Across 69 appearances, he scored 27 goals and supplied 34 assists, giving him 61 goal contributions.

Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga success and run to the Champions League semi-finals provide the team achievements to match his individual numbers. In addition to this, France’s fourth-place finish at the World Cup also added international experience to his campaign and the ex-Crystal Palace forward is expected to be a key component of Les Bleus’ bid for European Championship glory in 2028.

5. Erling Haaland

Although he missed out on another Premier League crown at the end of last season, Erling Haaland’s numbers are the kind that demand attention. The Manchester City striker scored 58 goals and provided 11 assists in 64 appearances across all competitions, reaching 69 goal contributions.

A conversion rate of 27% makes his return even more striking, underlining the ruthless finishing that has made him one of the most feared goalscorers in the game. With his club performances keeping him firmly in the conversation, his role in Norway’s run to the last eight of the 2026 World Cup has only further strengthened his case for individual honours.

4. Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé has once again produced numbers that few players can match, scoring 58 goals in all competitions and registering 13 assists across 60 appearances. His 71 goal contributions underline his extraordinary capacity to decide games, while 290 shots reflect the relentless pressure he puts on opposition defences.

Although an absence of silverware with Real Madrid last season leaves a question mark over his overall case, particularly alongside rivals who enjoyed greater team success, his World Cup Golden Boot win serves as a powerful reminder of his ability to deliver when the stakes are highest.

3. Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal is no longer simply a young talent with the potential to become a superstar. His 25 goals and 20 assists in 57 appearances give him 45 goal contributions, while his creativity and ability to beat defenders make him a constant source of danger. He can change the rhythm of a game with a single run, pass or moment of individual brilliance.

Winning La Liga with Barcelona and lifting the World Cup with Spain gives Yamal a remarkable collection of honours to accompany his individual numbers. His influence at such a young age makes his rise all the more extraordinary, and the combination of production, trophies and big-stage impact earns him third place. He is already making a serious case for football’s biggest individual prize.

2. Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi’s numbers remain extraordinary even at the age of 39. He registered 45 goals and 30 assists in 49 appearances for Inter Miami and Argentina, producing 75 goal contributions. His rate of 1.62 contributions per 90 minutes is the highest in our dataset, even if you consider the level of opposition found in Major League Soccer.

Then again, Messi’s international efforts add further weight, with Argentina reaching a second successive World Cup final. Just as he missed out by a narrow margin in the 2026 final, he misses out on top spot in our Power Rankings. The diminutive Argentine has already won the Ballon d’Or on eight separate occasions; we have denied him a ninth individual accolade.

1. Harry Kane

That means Harry Kane takes top spot after a phenomenal campaign in front of goal for both club and country. He scored 73 times in Bayern Munich or England colours and also supplied eight assists across 65 appearances. His total of 81 goal contributions was the highest among all our Power Ranking candidates.

His 1.26 goals per 90 minutes and 30% conversion rate underline a striker operating at an exceptional level. That output led Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title at the end of last season and England to a third-place finish at this summer’s World Cup. He may have been denied by Lionel Messi on the international front just a few months ago, but we have him tipped to exact revenge next week.
