England take on India in the T20 World Cup semi-final

England and India will battle it out at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, for a spot in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026, with both sides two wins away from securing an unprecedented third title.

The hosts, touted as nearly unbeatable in this format heading into the tournament, relied on a sensational 97* (50) from Sanju Samson to knock an upbeat West Indies out in their virtual quarter-final. Given the depth, experience and know-how, one could argue they were never meant to endure the do-or-die scenario.

Neither did England, who have spluttered and stuttered their way to a fifth successive T20 World Cup semifinal. They avoided scares against Nepal and Italy, lost out to West Indies in their group's high-profile contest, and have heavily depended on individual brilliance; most times from none other than Will Jacks, who has four man of the match awards to his name.

Six-hitting fiesta on the cards

There are few grounds in India that offer true bounce than Wankhede, and the two familiar foes are peppered with match winners and batters until seven or eight down.

The famous stadium has witnessed 120 sixes hit already this World Cup, nine more than Eden Gardens - another boundary-scoring venue with smaller square boundaries.

It has been the middle order of both teams topping the sixes charts. Jacks has struck 12, as has Hardik Pandya, while Shivam Dube and Sam Curran have bludgeoned 11 and eight respectively.

The toss conundrum

Arguably England's finest white ball batter, Jos Butter, on the other hand, has been second-guessing himself on the crease.

He has gotten out to an angled bat twice, scooping the ball up to mid-off off deliveries he would usually clear, and poked at it a couple of times, highlighting how bereft of confidence he is.

And time and again, cricket has proven to be a feared disciplinarian. It's being one to Abhishek Sharma now, who, like Buttler, had been India's most bankable yet destructive batter leading up to the World Cup.

Given that both sides have a few misfiring batters at the top, and that they have tasted success this campaign batting first, it's likely the two captains will look to put runs on the board.

The scoreboard pressure, in fact, could be a slight chink in the armor in an otherwise peerless Indian unit. Suryakumar Yadav's team won each of their group stage matches batting first, and stumbled against South Africa in the Super 8s when asked to reply to a robust total of 187.

But with temperatures rising as we settle into March, there could be an increasing presence of dew as the match wears on. And neither side would want to bat first if there's any indication, thereby creating a paradox and even more so, infusing the unpredictability variable into an already evenly poised clash.

Match Winner - India

India have the slight advantage over England in this competition, having beaten them thrice in five encounters.

While Harry Brook's side have Jofra Archer's three overs up top, Curran's bowling at the closing stages and the guile of Adil Rashid, India have an all-phase cheat code in Jasprit Bumrah, who has peaked at the right time this World Cup.

India, therefore, arguably hold a decisive advantage. Their roster is filled with impactful players who are well-practiced on this surface, and with the backing of a boisterous home crowd, they are in a prime position to win.

Recommended Bet: Match Winner - India

Player's Total Runs - Phil Salt - Under 24.5

Salt and Buttler, as a pair, average merely 12 this T20 World Cup. Now that could change, the but the odds of that occurrence against conceivably the most potent bowling attack in the tournament are stacked against the opening duo.

Much has been made of Buttler, but Salt's returns have been largely underwhelming as well.

His boom-or-bust approach has yielded just 100 runs across eight matches against India at 14.29 per innings.

What's more concerning is his match-up against Arshdeep Singh, having accumulated 13 runs in 16 balls against the left-armer in T20Is and losing his wicket twice. And that battle could result in his undoing once again.

Recommended bet: Player's Total Runs - Phil Salt - Under 24.5
