Winter Power surges to Nunthorpe Stakes glory

Winter Power beat off competition from Golden Pal and Suesa to claim the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes at York's Ebor Festival.

The three-year-old filly, saddled by Silvestre de Sousa, ran brilliantly for the whole five-furlong distance to claim her third win at York this year.

Golden Pal led the way before fading badly towards the end and Winter Power had enough in the tank to win one-and-a-quarter lengths clear of Emaraaty Ana in second and Dragon Symbol third.

She had already won two Listed races at York this year, but this is by far the finest hour for her.

Trainer Tim Easterby was thrilled with the outcome. He said: "She's an incredible filly. She just came right for the day.

"I wasn't worried about the opposition. You just try and get your horse to the race fit, healthy, and well. The jockey has to be chilled, too. Everything went to plan."

Stradivarius wins Lonsdale Cup

Serial winner Stradivarius has become the first horse to win the Lonsdale Cup three times after narrowly beating Spanish Mission at York.

It was the seven-year-old's first run since June when he disappointingly lost his grip on the Ascot Gold Cup only finishing fourth behind eventual winner Subjectivist.

John Gosden's charge, who won the Group Two race in 2018 and 2019, was made to work very hard by the William Buick saddled Spanish Mission.

But Stradivarius snuck the win by a small margin and jockey Frankie Dettori was delighted.

The Italian said: "I love the horse so much. He's not getting any younger, it was always going to be a messy race and I was using Richard [Kingscote on The Grand Visir] as a reference point.

"But when William came, I had to go straight for home.

Alternative targets for Trueshan

Alan King is mulling his options or Trueshan after deciding against running his stablemate in the Lonsdale Cup.

A battle with Stradivarius was on the cards but King decided to withdraw his five-year-old stable star due to the ground being too firm.

That ruled him out of Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June in what has been a frustrating period for Trueshan.

He did get a chance to show his class in the Goodwood Cup Stakes last month, winning by three and three-quarter lengths.

Speaking after the declaration as a non-runner, King said: "We've decided to take him out. It wasn't really a difficult decision now the ground has gone good to firm.

"We've got Goodwood in the bag, and there are plenty of big targets later in the year for him, so the one thing we don't want to do is go jarring him up.

"I'm sure he wouldn't have been at his best on quick ground, anyway."

Reach For The Moon aiming to progress

John Gosden says Reach For The Moon has prepared well for his run in the Solario Stakes at Sandown on Saturday.

The two-year-old is the hot-favourite for the Group Three race following his maiden win at Newbury last month.

He also ran well in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, narrowly being beaten by Point Lonsdale.

Gosden is certainly optimistic about the son of Sea The Stars.

He said: "After Reach For The Moon won his maiden at Newbury, we said we would go for the Solario. I've been pleased with his preparation, and it is always a race that I like to target.

"It is a big step up in class for him, but hopefully, he can handle it. The horse that was second to him last time won at York on Thursday and that all helps."
