The visitors wasted favourable conditions on Day 1 by bowling loosely, allowing Kurtis Patterson (137) and Jayden Goodwin (70) to combine for 174 runs early in the first innings. Josh Philippe was the other main contributor for Australia A, he posted a run-a-ball 120 not out with 15 boundaries and 5 sixes to give his team a huge first innings score of 373. The hosts' seam attack made regular inroads on the England Lions' batting, waltzing through the lower order to give them a first innings lead of 257 and allowing them to enforce the follow-on. Davies and McKinney started strongly, and the latter brought up a run-a-ball century of his own on the third morning.
