- Southampton have conceded 19 goals in seven league and cup games this season
- Ipswich have won 18 of their last 21 league matches
- Recommended bet: Ipswich to win

Southampton were in the Premier League in 2022-23 while Ipswich were playing League One football but the teams look set for a competitive contest in the Championship on Tuesday.

Saints won three of their first four games under Russell Martin, enhancing their status as one of the promotion favourites, but they have been thumped 5-0 by Sunderland and 4-1 by Leicester in their last two matches.

Ipswich were well backed in the build-up to the season and have lived up to those expectations, winning five of their first six league games with the exception being a dramatic 4-3 home loss to Leeds, another of the clubs relegated from the Premier League last season.

Southampton may appeal Kamaldeen Sulemana's red card against Leicester but, as it stands, the winger will be suspended on Tuesday.

Samuel Edozie is a doubt so Joe Aribo or Sekou Mara could come into the starting XI. Defenders Jack Stephens and Juan Larios remain sidelined along with new striker Ross Stewart.

Ipswich's Leif Davis suffered an ankle injury on Saturday so Manchester United loanee Brandon Williams should start at left-back.

Wes Burns and Christian Walton are injured while summer signing Jack Taylor is hoping for a first league start in midfield.

The stats

Over 2.5 goals has landed in 11 of Southampton's last 12 matches across all competitions, while the Saints have conceded 19 goals in seven league and cup games this season.

All three of Southampton's league wins in 2023-24 have been by a 2-1 scoreline.

Ipswich have won 18 of their last 21 league matches and 13 of their 16 goals in all competitions this season have come in the 45th minute or later.

The Tractor Boys have scored the first goal in each of their last 10 away league matches.

Prediction

Southampton have had an eventful start to their campaign and they may struggle to bounce back from their heavy defeats to Sunderland and Leicester in Tuesday's home clash with Ipswich.

Saints drew 4-4 with Liverpool on the final day of the 2022-23 Premier League season and shared another 4-4 with Norwich in August before conceding nine goals in their last two league matches.

While Southampton are clearly still finding their feet under new manager Martin, Kieran McKenna's Ipswich are a slick, settled unit who have handled the step up to the Championship superbly.

They won 13 of their last 15 League One matches last term to seal automatic promotion and can make it four wins out of four away from Portman Road this season, having beaten Sunderland, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday on their own turf.

The Tractor Boys, who came from 2-0 down to defeat Cardiff 3-2 in their last home game, have conceded just one goal in three away fixtures and that defensive solidity gives them an edge over their leaky hosts.
