Armando Broja gave Southampton their first Premier League win of the season at St Mary's against Leeds.

The Albanian international, on loan from Chelsea, scored his first Premier League goal when he finished a swift counter-attack in the second half.

The Saints had dominated the first half but failed to show the cutting edge required to take the lead.

An injury-ridden visiting side offered very little attacking threat and came closest through Daniel James, who flashed a shot wide after robbing the ball from Mohammed Salisu.

The defeat leaves Marcelo Bielsa's Whites just one spot above the relegation places.

Home boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was more than pleased with his team's performance. He said: "It is important to get the first win, the most important one of the season.

"It took a bit longer this season. We fully deserved this win.

"We were aggressive and showed some good solutions. It was a demanding game for everybody but the lads did a good job.

"We had a short two days to prepare for the game and the gameplan worked well I thought."

Southampton picked up their first win in the Premier League since May (3-1 vs Fulham), ending a run of nine games without a victory in the competition (drawn four and lost five).

Leeds have only won one of their eight games in the Premier League this season (drawn three and lost four) — their fewest at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1981-82 (one) when they finished 20th and were relegated.

Leeds attempted just three shots in the game at St Mary’s — in their 150 games under Bielsa in all competitions, the only game they have managed fewer in was against Manchester City in April when they had a man sent off in the first half (two).

Broja’s winner for Southampton was the first goal scored by an Albanian player in the Premier League.

Aged 20 years and 36 days, Broja became the youngest player to score on his first Premier League start for Southampton.

Since the start of last season, Leeds have won just 18% of their Premier League games when Kalvin Phillips has not featured (2/11), compared to a 49% win rate when he has played (17/35).
