- Hull have won their last four away games, including 2-1 at Southampton most recently

Hull to win

The big fixtures come thick and fast in the race for the play-offs and Preston, in eighth, against Hull, in sixth, is huge.

Just three points separate these teams and both are in fine form as they prepare for their crunch showdown at Deepdale.

Team news

Ex-Hull wide man Robbie Brady has recovered from a thigh strain to offer Preston boss Ryan Lowe an option on the left side of his 3-5-2 set-up.

Liam Delap is Hull’s only long-term absentee but Liam Rosenior is still faced with decisions to make.

Hull have been excellent of late, especially on the road, playing without a recognised striker and Rosenior needs to decide whether to persevere with that set-up or bring in someone like Billy Sharp or Aaron Connolly to lead the line.

In midfield, Rosenior may well bring back Regan Slater for Tyler Morton alongside the supreme Jean Michael Seri.

The stats

Preston are unbeaten in their last six league matches, taking 14 points out of a possible 18.

Only bottom club Rotherham (8.3) average fewer shots per game in the Championship than Preston (9.4).

Hull have lost only one of their last seven and have won each of their last four away games, with only Leicester having won more times on the road than the Tigers this season.

Preston have had a division-high 12 matches produce exactly three goals. Hull are joint next best with 11.

The last four fixtures between these sides have produced two 0-0 draws and a total of just two goals.

Prediction

Preston and Hull, unfancied promotion contenders at the start of the season, are hitting serious form at just the right time.

Preston have won four of their last five games, including a 3-2 success over Ipswich and culminating in last week’s stunning 3-0 triumph at Coventry.

Hull have taken 10 points from the last 12 available, nine of which came on the road, including a scintillating 2-1 win at Southampton where they could and should have won by more.

To follow up with a 1-1 draw at home to West Brom might seem like two points dropped, but it is another tough fixture overcome with little damage.

And since Rosenior’s side have won more points away (29) than at home (26), they should rightly fancy their chances, even at a place like Deepdale where Preston are excelling.

Preston are arguably over-achieving given their shots-per-game ratio — the second lowest in the division — and maybe that will catch up with them.
