The Premier League is home to some of the world's best finishers — but even the most prolific strikers miss the target from time to time.

We pick out the five top-flight stars who squandered the most big chances during the 2022-23 campaign.

=3. Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) — 20 big chances missed

Ollie Watkins managed his best ever Premier League tally with 15 goals for Aston Villa but he was not short of opportunities to make that total higher.

Had the 27-year-old stuck away a few of the 20 big chances he missed, Unai Emery's men could well have finished even higher than the respectable seventh they ended up.

=3. Mohamed Salah (Liverpool) — 20 big chances missed

A steady 19 of Mohamed Salah's 30 goals in all competitions came in the Premier League but the Egyptian was not exempt from missing high-profile sitters.

The Liverpool star missed the target with two penalties against Bournemouth and Arsenal and sits level with Watkins after 20 notable chances passed him by overall.

=3. Darwin Nunez (Liverpool) — 20 big chances missed

That pair are joined on 20 by fellow Reds forward Darwin Nunez, whose catalogue of glaring sitters became a target for ridicule during his first season in the Premier League.

The £85million Uruguayan will need to improve on his disappointing tally of nine goals next term if he is to avoid his time at Anfield being labelled a flop.

2. Marcus Rashford (Manchester United) — 22 big chances missed

Such was Marcus Rashford's lightning form at times last term, it was something of a surprise to see the Manchester United hotshot only finish sixth in the goalscoring rankings with 17 strikes.

For all of his impressive performances, the data shows the England forward failed to find the killer touch in 22 different gilt-etched situations.

1. Erling Haaland (Manchester City) — 28 big chances missed

Based on missed big chances alone, Erling Haaland would have finished second in the Golden Boot race behind only Harry Kane had he finished all 28 of them off.

That the Treble-winning Norwegian still managed to stick away a record-breaking 36 goals is a remarkable feat.

But while his maiden campaign will rightfully go down in Premier League folklore, he also takes the accolade of the forward who missed the most big chances in 2022-23.
