Premier League Wednesday preview: Spurs and United hunt wins in top-four race

Two rearranged games mean Premier League fans have a double dose of action to enjoy this evening.

Leicester entertain Tottenham in an intriguing contest while Ralf Rangnick's Manchester United face a tricky trip to Brentford.

Leicester vs Tottenham (7.30pm, BT Sport 2)

Tottenham can leap above North London rivals Arsenal with a victory at Leicester.

Spurs have not played a Premier League fixture since New Year’s Day due to postponements but are undefeated in their eight league matches since Antonio Conte’s arrival.

Their last trip to the King Power Stadium was a successful one, winning this fixture 4-2 last term thanks to a Kasper Schmeichel own-goal, Gareth Bale’s brace and a fine Harry Kane strike.

Kane, 28, has been a constant thorn in the side of the Foxes, with 17 goals in 16 career appearances against them his highest tally against a single side.

While Brendan Rodgers’ men made a slow start to the season, they enter this clash having won three straight home games for the first time since December 2019.

A recent upturn in form has tied in with James Maddison’s hot streak, with the midfielder netting four goals and providing three assists in his last six league appearances.

And goals should be on the menu tonight. This fixture has produced 54 in 14 matches since Leicester returned to the Premier League in 2014.

Brentford vs Manchester United (8pm, BT Sport 1)

Brentford and Manchester United meet in a top-flight fixture for the first time in 75 years.

The Red Devils are not exactly flying high this term but remain a dangerous beast away from home — especially in London, where they have not lost a league fixture since January 2020.

But United have lost seven of their last 22 meetings with newly-promoted sides, including the 4-1 defeat at Watford last November, which spelled the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.

Wednesday nights have been a happy hunting ground for them in years gone by, with a 61% win rate the highest of any side to spend more than a single season in the Premier League.

For the hosts, three wins in their last four home matches will ensure Thomas Frank’s men arrive in a confident mood. 

And they have already proven to be a tough nut for some of the division’s leading lights to crack.

Chelsea are the only Premier League ever-present to beat the Bees on their own turf this term, with Arsenal and Everton both defeated and Liverpool held to a draw.

Remarkably, Brentford's 12 home goals this season have been scored by 11 different players. Only Yoane Wissa has netted more than once at the Brentford Community Stadium.
