Norwich could be the latest side to take advantage of Middlesbrough's inconsistency

- Middlesbrough have lost four of their last five Championship matches
- Norwich have won four of their last six fixtures
- Recommended Bet: Norwich to win

Middlesbrough finished fourth in the Championship standings last season but have since fallen apart under Michael Carrick and ahead of the midweek batch of matches in the second tier, Boro were 12 points off the play-off places.

Hopes of promotion are fading fast and Carrick could well face a challenge keeping his job given the club's recent decline.

Things do not get any easier on Wednesday, either, as Carrick's side prepare to welcome in-form Norwich to the Riverside.

The Canaries are pushing for the play-offs with four wins from their last six games and will take some stopping.

Team news

Hosts Middlesbrough will again be without Isaiah Jones and Hayden Hackney, who are both injured, but Dael Fry is pushing for a return to the squad.

Norwich have no new injury concerns but could bring in Sydney van Hooijdonk for his first start in the Championship.

The stats

Norwich have lost only two of their 13 matches in 2024, going down 1-0 away to Leeds and losing 5-2 to Premier League giants Liverpool in the FA Cup.

On the road they have struggled, picking up only four wins in 17 away fixtures, but Boro have not been much better at home, collecting 21 points from 17 matches.

Middlesbrough have won just one of their last eight matches, having lost four of their last five games.

Predictions

Michael Carrick may be growing frustrated by Middlesbrough's form
Michael Carrick may be growing frustrated by Middlesbrough's form

Pressure is once again mounting on Carrick at Middlesbrough, who have been horribly inconsistent of late.

Boro picked up a huge 2-1 win away to league leaders Leicester City last month but that was their only win in their last eight matches.

They have lost four of their last five games, including 2-0 defeats to bottom-half pair Plymouth and Stoke in their last two matches.

They have been a shadow of the side they were last season and it will take a serious turnaround for Boro to finish in the top six.

For visitors Norwich, the prospect of a top-six finish is far more likely with the Canaries having moved to just one point below the play-off spots before this week's matches.

It is fair to say they have struggled on their travels this season, with only four of their 16 league victories coming away from Carrow Road.

But they held their own in draws away to Blackburn and QPR last month and they can go a step further against out-of-sorts Middlesbrough.

They have won four of their last six games, putting four past the likes of Cardiff and Watford in that run, and look ready to cause a stir at the Riverside.
