Brighton boss Melissa Phillips is still bursting with pride after Brighton's shock Women's Super League win at Manchester City on Sunday.

The Seagulls soaked up intense pressure from Gareth Taylor's star-studded side before snatching three points through Lee Geum-min's late strike.

It ended City's 21-game unbeaten streak in the WSL on home turf and Phillips showered praise on her players at full-time.

Speaking to Brighton's official website, the 36-year-old coach said: "I am super proud of the group. I think we deserved it. 

"To come here and keep a team that has been so good in possession and scoring so many goals and pick up a clean sheet is a credit to the group.

"We kept a lot of their opportunities at bay. We defended our box incredibly well in the second half and that is ultimately the most important thing."

The unexpected victory was Brighton's first league win since the opening day and lifted them to ninth in the table.

And American tactician Phillips admits some disappointing early results prompted a change in approach, which is now paying dividends.

She explained: "When we dropped points earlier this season, we said we have to attack and defend our boxes better.

"I still I think there are areas for growth  but it's a huge three points, it's a step in the right direction and I couldn't be prouder of the group."

Brighton will now look to surprise title hopefuls Arsenal when Jonas Eidevall's side head to the South Coast at the weekend.
