Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool can make it third time lucky against Manchester United this season
Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool can make it third time lucky against Manchester United this season

- Liverpool have picked up 19 points from the last 21 available
- Manchester United have scored in 16 consecutive games in all competitions
- Recommended bet:
Liverpool to win and both teams to score

Liverpool head to Manchester United in fine form having won 19 points from the last 21 available, and they know victory at the home of their fierce rivals on Sunday will see them retain their spot at the summit of the Premier League table.

United saw a 3-2 lead become a 4-3 defeat in injury time against Chelsea in midweek and boss Erik ten Hag will be desperate for a response from his troops — but they are facing an opponent they have struggled against in recent seasons.

Liverpool have won four of the last six league meetings, losing only once, although United did claim an FA Cup success over the Merseysiders after extra time at this venue last month.

Team news

There is a defensive crisis at Old Trafford as Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez are both sidelined, with Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans also expected to miss out.

That means 19-year-old Willy Kambwala is set to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of the United defence.

Casemiro is another doubt for Ten Hag, while Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Anthony Martial and Altay Bayindir are definitely absent.

Liverpool remain without Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold and first choice keeper Alisson.

All three are expected to return to training soon, but Joel Matip, Ben Doak, Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara are long-term absentees.

Liverpool are unbeaten in 12 games in normal time across all competitions (W9, D3).

Manchester United have scored 21 goals in 14 home Premier League fixtures.

Liverpool have won five of the last eight Premier League meetings between these sides, losing just once.

Both teams have scored in five of the last six meetings between these sides at Old Trafford.

Prediction

United’s confidence will have taken a bit of a battering after their late collapse at Stamford Bridge and that defeat came at a further cost as a few more names were added to their already lengthy injury list.

In contrast, Liverpool come into the game with momentum having secured back-to-back wins since their FA Cup exit at this venue, and their own injury problems are easing.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are the team in better shape and their need is greater, as United’s top-four hopes look to be over, so the visitors should really be expected to win based on current form and their superior head-to-head record.

However, United should be able to provide the title chasers with a bit of a test and they can at least get on the scoresheet.

The hosts have scored in 16 successive games in all competitions and have only failed to score in three of their 14 home league games, while Liverpool have now gone six games without a clean sheet (W4, D2) and will also be without the services of their first-choice keeper once again on Sunday.
