Just not good enough

Peter Schmeichel was among the Manchester United legends to condemn the team's limp performance against Manchester City.

The former keeper watched in horror as the visitors seemingly threw in the towel in the second half as City secured a comfortable 4-1 win at the Etihad.

And he joined old team-mates Roy Keane and Gary Neville in voicing his disappointment at the manner in which Ralf Rangnick's men were defeated.

Schmeichel, 58, said: "I thought Rangnick should have changed things at half-time. He may have had words but the second half was worse.

"At no point were United in the game apart from on the scoreline.

"Far too many players are either not good enough or don't care enough. Having an interim manager means he can't do much.

"He knows he's not going to be there, so what can he change?

"Manchester City were majestic but they haven't had to work that hard for it and I think that will hurt United most."

With a home clash against Tottenham up next on Saturday, Rangnick's side will need to bounce back quickly.

City had a point to prove

While most of the attention was on United after the Manchester derby, Danny Murphy was quick to highlight just how good City were.

With Liverpool hot on their heels in the title race, the Premier League leaders swept aside their rivals in front of the City faithful.

And Murphy believes it was a statement of intent from Pep Guardiola's men.

The former Reds midfielder, 44, said: "It looked like City felt they had a point to prove and their second-half performance was an emphatic statement to anyone who doubted them.

"This was a response I saw coming, too. City were always going to dip a little bit at some point this season because the standards they have set have been nothing short of amazing.

"It is credit to Liverpool that they are even still near the Premier League leaders after the run that Guardiola's side were on until they lost to Tottenham.

"So after seeing City lose one game and then scrape through against Everton with a bit of luck, it was no surprise to see them come out for a huge game like a Manchester derby and absolutely batter United, because that is what great teams do."

Ex-United boss dies

Frank O'Farrell, the man Sir Matt Busby picked to replace him at Old Trafford, has died at the age of 94.

He succeeded Sir Matt as United boss in 1971 but was sacked after just 18 months.

Before managing the Red Devils, the ex-West Ham and Preston player, who was capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland, enjoyed spells in charge at Torquay and Leicester.

United's club website said: "While Frank’s 18-month reign at the United helm was an undulating affair, there is no shred of doubt that he was a talented manager and a man of unimpeachable integrity.

"The abiding frustration is what might have been."

Fofana is going nowhere

Wesley Fofana has extended his Leicester deal until 2027.

The defender made 38 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions last season after joining from Saint-Etienne in October 2020, helping them to FA Cup glory along the way.

He suffered a broken leg and damaged ankle ligaments in pre-season but is now closing in on a return to first-team action.

Fofana, 21, said: "I’m really happy to sign a new contract. It shows the club have confidence in me.

"It’s my club, I love the fans, so I’m really happy and really looking forward to being back playing.

"I love everything about the club. I love the city, I love the fans. It’s a family, which is what I love the most. Everyone is close and gets on well.

"We also have a great team and are continuing to progress, with a desire to win more trophies. That’s why I have committed my future to the club until 2027.

"I want to achieve more with the club. There is a lot of talent here and still a lot more we can do together."

Chelsea star's season is over

Melanie Leupolz will not play again for Chelsea this season after announcing she is pregnant.

The German international, 27, is set to continue light training in the coming months and will rejoin the reigning Women's Super League champions after her maternity leave.

A club statement said: "This week, Chelsea Women’s midfielder Melanie Leupolz announced the happy news of her pregnancy to staff and team-mates.

"Melanie, who has been with the club for two years, will continue to be supported by the club’s medical staff in the coming months as she continues light training.

"However, she will not feature in fixtures for the rest of the season as she prepares for her new arrival.

"We look forward to welcoming Melanie back following her maternity leave and we are excited to welcome a new addition to the Blues family."
