Manchester City forward Lauren Hemp has encouraged her team-mates to stay grounded following their 2-1 win over Everton.

Victory for City took Gareth Taylor's side to the top of the Women's Super League table, having started the day behind defending champions Chelsea on goal difference.

WSL top scorer Khadija Shaw broke the deadlock at the Joie Stadium before Hemp extended the title challengers' lead after half-time.

And despite Hanna Bennison's late consolation, Hemp says the result will fill the squad with confidence.

She told Sky Sports: "Having a Saturday game we can now sit back and watch the games on the Sunday.

"But at the end on the day, it's all focus on ourselves because it is in our hands.

"We stay in our own lane and the results will come. There's belief shining throughout the team. The confidence is there.

"It's about taking each game as it comes and hopefully the results take care of themselves."

City have now won nine league matches in a row, a run which stretches back to November 12.

Having spent the last two weeks on international duty with England, Hemp was pleased City were able to build on their crucial 1-0 win at Chelsea last time out.

The 23-year-old added: "I thought the team ground out the result really well.

"We started off on a good foot and kept the ball quite a lot. We created a lot of chances which we were unfortunate to not put away.

"They scored quite late on and at the end we were holding on for a win and that's the most important thing."

City's title rivals Chelsea are in action at Leicester tomorrow before the two sides meet in the Conti Cup semi-finals on Thursday night.
