Didier Deschamps will be hoping to guide France to another World Cup win in Qatar

France's triumph at Russia 2018 was the fourth successive World Cup victory for European nations — but plenty of others will be dreaming of lifting the trophy at Qatar 2022.

Les Bleus remain among the favourites alongside a host of other teams in Europe and in South America.

With less than eight months until the tournament begins, we assess the main contenders and deliver our verdict on who is likely to become world champions on December 18.

South Americans to fall short

Heavyweights Brazil and Argentina sailed through qualifying but have questions to answer after their efforts four years ago.

Brazil's challenge came to an end with a 2-1 quarter-final loss to Belgium.

It was the third time in four World Cups they had been knocked out in the last eight and their current squad — which remains heavily reliant on Neymar — may struggle to fare any better.

Argentina will again look to Lionel Messi to spearhead their challenge.

Messi, 34, has struggled since joining Paris Saint-Germain last summer but Lautaro Martinez offers a high-quality attacking alternative to share the burden.

Buoyed by winning the Copa America last summer, it is possible the Albiceleste will go closer than the last-16 place they managed in 2018.

No joy for England

Gareth Southgate's England, who reached the semi-finals at Russia 2018 and the final at Euro 2020, are among a number of European contenders with a good shout of claiming glory in Qatar.

But the Three Lions benefitted from favourable draws at both of those tournaments and failed to grasp the nettle on home soil last summer.

Southgate has lots of attacking quality at his disposal but can be overly cautious in the big games and that could cost his side.

Spain were among the more impressive teams at Euro 2020.

Outstanding attacking midfielder Pedri caught the eye and the Spaniards could be ready to mount a strong challenge.

But it is France who stand out as the team with the deepest and most talented squad.

If Didier Deschamps — also known as a cautious manager — can come up with the right blend, they will be tough to stop.

With N'Golo Kante patrolling the midfield, Les Bleus are always tough to play against.

And the attacking qualities of Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema provide them with the necessary firepower to land a third World Cup in seven attempts.
