In Focus: The Premier League stars who lit up Matchday 14

Defeats for Chelsea and Liverpool stole the headlines on a weekend that saw leaders Arsenal continue their fine start to the campaign.

With only two draws across Matchday 14, there were plenty of talking points all around the Premier League.

And we have picked out five players who made their mark.

Kaoru Mitoma

Finally handed his first Premier League start for Brighton, Kaoru Mitoma made an instant impact in the 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea.

Just five minutes into the clash he set up Leandro Trossard for the opening goal in a performance full of promise.

While the Japan international always looks a threat on the ball and created two further chances, his defensive work was just as important.

Returning after an injury, nobody made more than Mitoma’s three tackles, while he won the ball back an impressive seven times.

Afterwards, Mitoma said: "I’d give myself just about a pass mark, as I found [the match] quite hard physically. My condition factored into my decision-making."

Callum Wilson

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has made it absolutely clear that he believes he should be in England's World Cup squad.

So netting twice and notching an assist in front of the watching Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate as the Magpies smashed Aston Villa 4-0 was a perfect piece of timing.

Wilson now has six goals for the season and will feel he has gone ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and maybe even Ivan Toney in the race to be included.

Legendary Toon forward Alan Shearer certainly agrees. He said: "If Callum Wilson is fit, there's no doubt in my mind that he should go. 

"He's had injury problems, there's no denying that, but if he's fit then for me, he has to go because he provides something different."

Crysencio Summerville

Plenty of Liverpool fans might have been asking who Crysencio Summerville was ahead of their clash with Leeds on Saturday night.

By the time the 21-year-old gave the visitors a famous and much-needed 2-1 win at the death, they were well aware of the Dutchman's talent.

Summerville showed great composure to find the bottom corner in the 89th minute of the Anfield clash for his second goal in as many weeks.

The Feyenoord academy graduate said: "I can't describe my feelings right now. I saw it, it went quickly. When you are in the box you have to think quickly so it just happened! 

"It's a huge moment for me and my family, scoring at Anfield — it's a big moment for me."

Reiss Nelson

Over the past couple of years, Reiss Nelson will have watched Bukayo Saka light up the Premier League and wondered what might have been.

Tipped as the Arsenal academy’s most promising star, Nelson had not made a league appearance this term following recent loans at Hoffenheim and Feyenoord.

But sent on when Saka limped off after 27 minutes, the 22-year-old grabbed a rare chance with both hands as he scored twice in the 5-0 rout of Nottingham Forest.

If Mikel Arteta’s post-game comments are anything to go by, more opportunities will be coming his way this term.

The Gunners boss said: "Not only me but all his team-mates and all the staff are so happy for him because he's a kid that is really changing, really evolving, really maturing and showing every day how much he wants it."

Marcus Rashford

After a difficult 2021-22 campaign, Marcus Rashford is well and truly back to his best at Manchester United.

The forward’s fantastic header gave United a hard-earned 1-0 victory over West Ham and was his 100th goal for the club.

Rashford wanted to reach the century before his 25th birthday and he did, by the skin of his teeth.

He will celebrate that landmark today knowing that a spot in Southgate’s World Cup squad looks more and more likely with seven goals in all competitions.

After the game, Rashford said: "It’s a completely different energy around the club and the training ground. That puts me in a better headspace and I just feel really motivated now. That’s the area I was struggling in."
