Iga Swiatek looks like she is sauntering on her way to a fourth French Open victory and a successful title defence, but the Polish phenomenon may be served up some sort of challenge in her semi-final showdown with Coco Gauff.

This is a repeat of the 2022 final when Swiatek eased to a 6-1 6-3 victory and she has dominated her rivalry with the American, winning 10 of their 11 previous meetings.

It is tough to see the Pole being beaten given that dominance, especially on the back of her last two tournament appearances which have seen her double-bagel Anastasia Potapova before a 6-0 6-2 rout of fifth seed and quarter-final opponent Marketa Vondrousova.

However Gauff, last season’s US Open champion, is a cut above those rivals and should by now have some sort of idea of how to get some success against the world number one.

The 20-year-old impressed in a three-set win over Ons Jabeur in her quarter-final and, while this is a hike in class against the best clay-court player in the world, there is no reason to think she will be blown away.

Prediction

Having claimed clay-court titles in Madrid and Rome in the build-up to the French Open, many felt Swiatek would take plenty of stopping in Paris and so far that is how it has transpired.

The Pole, on a 17-match winning run, has dropped only one set across her five tournament victories and the manner of her last two wins over Potapova and Vondrousova suggest she may only be getting stronger.

Swiatek dropped only two games in those recent scalps, winning three of the four sets 6-0, and that makes this a daunting task for Gauff, who will know all too well that she trails the Pole 10-1 in their personal series.

The American has been beaten in straight sets in all four of their clay-court meetings, which includes the French Open final two seasons ago, all of which may point to an easy time of things for the defending champion.

But, while Swiatek should advance to another Roland Garros final, Gauff may have been shown a little disrespect at the prices given she is a Grand Slam champion that is improving all the time.

The 20-year-old was far from disgraced in a 6-4 6-3 defeat to Swiatek in the semi-finals in Rome last month and she can at least emulate that performance by winning over 6.5 games.
