Gareth Southgate could deploy Jude Bellingham in a more advanced role

‌Gareth Southgate has taken inspiration from how Real Madrid have unlocked Jude Bellingham's huge potential.

The midfielder, 20, has 14 goals and three assists in 20 LaLiga outings since moving to Spain from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

And Southgate has been debating how best to use Bellingham at Euro 2024.

He said: "He's been remarkable, really.

"We know he can adapt to pretty much anything. Clearly they've used him in a more advanced role.

"I guess the bit none of us necessarily saw was the number of goals he's scored.

"He's always looked to make those runs but he hasn't always had that finishing capacity — and he's done that brilliantly.

"I've spoken about him in September, October, November, but he continues to do exceptionally well.

"It's not different to where we have been playing him. It's definitely different to where we started him.

"But when he's having the success in the role he has it would be silly not to mirror that in terms of where he will play."

England were drawn alongside the Republic of Ireland, Finland and Greece in the Nations League.

And Southgate, whose contract runs out in December, accepts he may not be in charge by the time the tournament reaches its conclusion.

He added: "There's a fair chance half the coaches won't be here after the Euros. That's international football.

"You've got to see how the summer goes. It's as simple as that.

"In my view, I know what we're capable of achieving in the summer, I know what my own benchmark of success would be. After that, I'm not really thinking about anything else.

"Without a doubt it's exciting to take the team, it's always been exciting to take the team, whatever the strengths of the squad.

"In the end, we've got to deliver a performance and you've got to make the best decisions for everybody. I won't be in a position to make that decision before the tournament."
