Lamps ready to shine again as interim Chelsea boss

Frank Lampard appears set to seal a remarkable return to Chelsea as interim boss until the end of the season.

Reports suggest the former Everton manager is on the verge of rubberstamping his second spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, which could come in time for Saturday's clash at Wolves. 

Lampard, 44, was in the stands to witness the goalless draw against Liverpool on Tuesday — Chelsea's first outing since Graham Potter's sacking. 

And his cousin Jamie Redknapp believes the move makes sense.

The ex-Liverpool and Tottenham ace even suggested that steering the Blues to Champions League glory — replicating the achievement of Lampard’s old team-mate Roberto Di Matteo in 2012 — was possible. 

Redknapp, 49, said: "Nobody cares about the club or knows it better than he does. 

"This is a complete no-brainer if Chelsea were to go for him. It would be brilliant for him. 

"They've got a Champions League quarter-final to come against Real Madrid and people say it's almost impossible. 

"But Di Matteo did it. Stranger things have happened."

Potter was shown the door last Sunday after a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa left his side 11th in the Premier League. 

With a permanent appointment unlikely before the end of the campaign, a reunion with Chelsea's record goalscorer is believed to have been agreed.

Lampard, who starred for the club between 2001 and 2014, landed his dream job as Blues boss in July 2019 but was dismissed 18 months later.

He went on to take charge at Goodison Park before being axed in January after less than a year in charge. 

Luis Enrique, who reportedly flew into London on Wednesday to meet club officials, is said to be among the candidates to take the hotseat on a permanent basis.

Julian Nagelsmann, sacked recently by Bayern Munich, is also a contender but there are believed to be possible contractual complications to address. 

News of Lampard's return comes after Bruno Saltor, who took charge against Liverpool, revealed co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart briefed the players on Monday on the search for a new manager.
