Bees boss buzzing after Toney call-up

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been lauded by boss Thomas Frank after receiving his first England call-up.

Toney has been drafted into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Three Lions’ upcoming Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany.

Having netted five goals in first six league outings this season, including a stunning hat-trick at home to Leeds, the Bees marksman could now make his international bow at the San Siro on September 23.

And Frank has highlighted Toney’s determination on the road to the top, which saw the 26-year-old spend time with seven different football league clubs before finding home in West London.

Frank said: "The most credit must go to Ivan. He has performed exceptionally on the pitch ever since he joined us and has shown that he has the potential to play for England.

"Tributes should also be paid to his family and everyone who has worked with him at previous clubs to help him develop.

"This is a fantastic day, especially for Ivan but also for everyone at Brentford.

"To have someone in the England squad is a huge achievement for everyone at the club.

"To have an English player, at an English club, in the England squad, given the competition for those places, is a moment for us to cherish."

Hasenhuttl praises British public

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has praised the British public ahead of the return of the Premier League.

Hasenhuttl’s Saints travel to Aston Villa tomorrow night, in what will be the first English top-flight match since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, with Nottingham Forest's clash against Fulham kicking off simultaneously.

The Austrian coach, 55, agreed with the league’s decision to temporarily halt the fixture schedule and applauded the country’s response to the news from Buckingham Palace.

He said: "It was, for me, an absolutely clear decision not to play football last weekend and I would also completely understand if we wouldn’t play this weekend because it’s a special moment for this country.

"We will all be thinking about her and the whole weekend is a chance for everybody to show their respect and this is what we will do.

"I must say you can be very proud of the people living here because of the way they showed their respect for a wonderful person, for a very long term where she was on duty and serving this country.

"The way you show the respect is impressive, very special.

"All over the world, I haven’t seen something similar, to be honest, and I was in a lot of countries living and working.

"It’s very impressive how the people are reacting, how they are showing their respect."

Sterling short-changed after Salzburg point

Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling was left disappointed after his goal was not enough to secure a Champions League victory against FC Salzburg on Wednesday.

Noah Okafor netted a 75th-minute equaliser to frustrate the Blues in Graham Potter’s first game in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The point leaves the West Londoners bottom of Group E, three behind leaders AC Milan who they will face on October 5.

And having been asked to start in an unorthodox left wing-back role by the new boss, England ace Sterling believes there is plenty of room for improvement.

Speaking to BT Sport, he said: "I think with how we played, the chances we created, we dominated. 

"It's a bad result in the end but we played some good football at times. 

"I took the chance but we have to finish the job off. It felt like we were in control, but one chance one goal for them. 

"Under a new manager we will get better and keep progressing. I was playing in a slightly different role. 

"He [Graham Potter] said play out wide so in time I will get better. I'm happy to play along the front line. He wanted me out wide running at the full-back.

"We have got a big game coming up [against AC Milan] and we need to get a win from that."

Ange happy with his Bhoys

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou was in a positive mood after seeing his side earn their first point of their Champions League campaign thanks to a 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in Warsaw.

An own goal from Shakhtar midfielder Artem Bondarenko gave the Glaswegians the advantage after 10 minutes before they were pegged back by Mykhaylo Mudryk’s leveller.

But after reacting well to a 3-0 home defeat to defending champions Real Madrid in their Group F opener, Postecoglou now sees cause for optimism.

The Australian coach, 57, said: "The performance was excellent.

"Obviously the result was not reflective of that but I thought in the whole game the players gave everything and that’s all I can ask for.

"We needed that second goal and we had good chances to get it. From my perspective I can’t ask for more from them.

"We will get our rewards if we keep playing that kind of football and showing that sort of commitment.

"I think more significant than the point is the performance."

Bruce bristles after 'scandalous' performance

West Brom manager Steve Bruce pulled no punches after seeing his side slip to a 3-2 home defeat to Midlands rivals Birmingham.

Scott Hogan’s hat-trick was enough to earn the visitors all three points, to leave the Baggies 20th in the Championship table, with nine points from nine games.

Bruce’s men have won just one of their last eight outings in all competitions, and the 61-year-old coach could not hide his frustrations after their latest setback.

He said: "We didn’t take part in the game until the last 20 minutes.

"In a big derby we were found short. We didn’t win a challenge and we didn’t deal with Troy Deeney and the physicality of Birmingham. We were nowhere near where we should be.

"Individual errors are something you can’t fix. The concentration of the defenders was awful and the goals were something you’d see on the schoolboy pitch with 11-year-olds.

"When you defend as hideously as that, you’re in for a poor evening. It was awful. What we witnessed in the first hour was scandalous."

Moyes hoping for pitch-perfect performance

West Ham manager David Moyes has concerns regarding the artificial pitch his side will have to play on in tonight’s Europa Conference League clash at Silkeborg.

The Hammers head to Denmark top of Group B after their 3-1 victory over FCSB.

But Moyes remains unsure of his team selection, wary of how the surface at JYSK Park may affect defensive duo Craig Dawson and Aaron Cresswell.

He said: "It’s given me some thoughts.

"We respect that it’s an artificial pitch, we have some decisions to make.

"We’ll have a look at Craig and Aaron and check out what’s best for them with the surface and everything. They have done a bit of training.

"It’s something we have to work with and do the best we can."
