Stars collide

Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will take on former Premier League stars in a winner-takes-all seven-a-side tournament worth $1million (£800,000).

The Soccer Tournament is due to take place in North Carolina between May 31 and June 4, with 32 teams battling for the hefty prize.

A-listers Reynolds and McElhenney will represent Wrexham Red Dragons but are sure to have their work cut out against some of the former pros also lining up.

For example, Blade and Grass are made up of Stephen Ireland, Chris Eagles, Emile Heskey, Oumar Niasse, Geoff Cameron, Brek Shea and Keiren Westwood — who boast over 1,000 Premier League appearances between them.

Meanwhile, the American duo will face World Cup winner and Arsenal icon Cesc Fabregas in the group stage, with the Spaniard set to represent his current Italian Serie B side Como. 

Wolves, West Ham and Borussia Dortmund have also entered teams, with other entrants ranging from a US Women line-up to YouTube-famous British outfit Hashtag United.

Desailly's doubts

Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has cast doubt over Mauricio Pochettino's suitability for the manager's job at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino enjoyed a successful Premier League stint with Tottenham but more recently struggled to reach the heights expected of him at Paris Saint-Germain.

Now, the Argentine is the leading contender to take charge of the Blues but Desailly, 54, has concerns over how he would cope with the Londoners' star-studded squad.

The Frenchman, 54, explained: "Pochettino could be a good choice. 

"He's all the time loved by his players, and he has the belief and the understanding at the highest level — but also for him, he realised the same problem at PSG.

"Handling top-class players was something difficult for him. He had a problem there. 

"But for Chelsea to rebuild and create a winning mentality, he could be the correct man."

O'Shea departs

John O'Shea has left his role as Stoke first-team coach to focus on his commitments with the Republic of Ireland.   

The former Manchester United defender, who is Ireland’s assistant coach, only joined the Potters last July.

O'Shea, 42, told Stoke’s official website: "I would like to thank everyone at Stoke for their help and guidance last season and wish the club good luck for the future."

Father and son

Tomorrow evening's episode of Match of the Day looks set to be a family affair.

History will be made on Saturday evening when the legendary football highlights show entertains a father-and-son punditry duo for the first time ever.

Host Gary Lineker will be joined by regular analyst Ian Wright, but also by the Arsenal icon's son — former Manchester City winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Time for change

Marc Skinner has backed his Manchester United players to end their rotten run against Chelsea in Sunday's Women's FA Cup Final.

Since their inception in 2018, United have never recorded a victory over the Blues in any competition with Emma Hayes' side winning both Women's Super League clashes this term.

But Skinner is convinced that his players can snap that miserable streak in this weekend's Wembley showpiece.

The 40-year-old coach said: "This will be different.

"There’s no doubt in my mind that if you want to pick a favourite, then Chelsea should be put on that mantle because of the fact they have been here before and done this before.

"But the reality is we have a team of rebels that want to make sure that won't be the fact.

"It's a single game. It's a single focus. On the day we'll try to manage as best we can."

Wish Granted

Grant McCann has returned to League Two club Doncaster for a second spell as boss.

McCann led Rovers to a sixth-placed finish in League One in the 2018-19 campaign before leaving the club to join Championship outfit Hull.

But after sacking Danny Schofield earlier this week, the Yorkshire-based club have moved quickly to bring the Northern Irishman back to the Keepmoat Stadium.
