No time to sulk

Mikel Arteta expects Arsenal to bounce back after they were dumped out of the Europa League by Sporting on Thursday night.

The Premier League leaders lost on penalties to the Portuguese giants after drawing 1-1 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate. 

Gabriel Martinelli's spot-kick was saved by visiting goalkeeper Antonio Adan before Aaron Ramsdale was unable to prevent Nuno Santos from deciding the tie in the shootout.

It was a disappointing night in North London for the Gunners and Arteta is urging his players to focus on Sunday's game against managerless Crystal Palace.

He said: "We really wanted to go through in the competition and fight and go for it. Today we tried for 120 minutes and penalties and it wasn’t enough.

"We created three big chances and didn’t score. When we went to extra-time we showed incredible energy again and top mentality when it wasn’t our best day to keep going.

"We put everything in and with the effort that the boys put in when it wasn’t our best day individually and collectively, the hunger and desire that they showed to win, it was incredible.

"We really wanted it and it didn’t happen. We need to put our heads up, look for Palace. It’s what it is. There are 11 games and the first one starts on Sunday."

Selles relishing Spurs challenge

Ruben Selles is relishing the upcoming clash against Antonio Conte's Tottenham this weekend.

Southampton sit bottom of the Premier League table but their head coach believes they can go toe-to-toe with North London team who are pushing to secure a spot in the Champions League next season.

Ahead of the clash on the South Coast, Selles heaped praise on the Italian manager, saying: "I have big respect for Antonio.

"He fought his way to the top and had time in the Italian national team. I met him a couple of times when they played in Baku.

"Juventus, Inter Milan, Chelsea and now Tottenham, it is always an identity, always solid and always difficult to beat.

"He has been one of the top coaches in the last 10 years and it will be my pleasure to play against him and try to beat him, but with the biggest respect always.

"We met when we played [against Chelsea] with Qarabag when we played them in the Champions League. We met after the game and had a good chat so we met a couple of times.

"For me it was a pleasure in that moment and it is a pleasure now to stand in front of them and do my very best to beat them."

Positive Palace

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has insisted that the mood around the club remains positive and optimistic despite the sacking of Patrick Vieira.

The London outfit released a statement earlier today confirming that former captain Paddy McCarthy would take charge against Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday.

Palace remain winless in 2023 and have scored just five goals in all competitions but are looking to end their drought at the Emirates against the league leaders.

Co-owner Parish said: "The players are fine and everybody is looking forward to Sunday, really,

"The feeling is good. You know, everybody loved Patrick, genuinely. The players had all the time in the world for him. You saw from the performances he never lost the players at all, they were all running and playing for him.

"I think things just weren’t happening, so the mood was good, it was fine, but obviously we’re hoping that there’s a bit of fresh impetus, a few different ideas, maybe we surprise the opposition a little bit doing something different.

"We’ve got good players, we’ve got a good squad, we’ve got good lads. They follow Patrick and they will follow Paddy and they will follow Darren and they will do the best for the football club."

Dwight our ace in relegation fight

Sean Dyche is backing Dwight McNeil to push on after the midfielder scored the winner against Brentford last weekend.

McNeil, 23, played under the Everton boss at Burnley and is already looking back to his best after struggling to find form during Frank Lampard's spell in charge.

The reunion at Goodison Park has been a real boost for the Toffees, who find themselves in the midst of a relegation battle and face a tough trip to Chelsea on Saturday.

But Dyche has insisted that McNeil can make a real difference in the fight for survival and has noted that the summer recruit is looking increasingly sharp on the training pitch.

He said: "I think he’s just finding his feet again. It’s a big thing for a player who came into a smaller club like Burnley.

"It’s sometimes an easier place to go when you’re young. He built a very good reputation and gets a move here and it becomes a bigger feel. I think he’s just got his shoulders back.

"We reminded him that, when he relaxes and works hard, he’s a good player. The information given to him has been very, very simple. I think he’s a player who’s ready to improve and he is improving."

Moyes praises players' professionalism

David Moyes has hailed West Ham's professional performance against AEK Larnaca as the Hammers progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.

The East London outfit won 4-0 on the night and 6-0 on aggregate at the London Stadium as Jarrod Bowen became the Irons' record scorer in European competition.

His brace was complemented by goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Divin Mubama to give Moyes' side a much-needed boost.

On the performance, the Scot said: "We did a really professional job, It was always a risky game and if they got a goal back we’d maybe get a bit anxious.

"It’s really pleasing. It doesn’t happen all the time, two quarter-finals in two years in Europe.

"We’ve had some great trips, played in some brilliant stadiums. It’s been great for the club, the staff and the players."

On Bowen becoming the club's top scorer in Europe, Moyes added: "It’s really important. 

"Jarrod was a huge player for us and tonight and he got a couple of goals, so it’s really good for him."

Hungry for more

Facundo Pellistri is hungry for silverware and more opportunities after finally making his first start for Manchester United.

The 21-year-old featured in the Red Devils' 1-0 win at Real Betis, a significant step forward for the youngster who made his competitive debut back in January.

On his Europa League appearance in Spain, the Uruguayan winger said: "I’m really happy, I really worked for this moment.

"Luckily we could win. It was our mission. We came here to win, we could win. The manager really trusts me, so I felt that confidence from him.

"I’m hungry. A lot of players in the group are really hungry, we have one amazing group.

"So now I’m focused on helping the team and to win. Then we will see what happens."

Erik ten Hag's men will face Sevilla in the quarter-final stage.
