Penalty drama

Amadou Onana missed a decisive penalty for Everton in their Carabao Cup loss to Fulham on Tuesday night but head coach Sean Dyche has praised his players for their willingness to step up.

The Belgian midfielder delayed his run-up before tamely tapping the ball straight down the middle for Bernd Leno to collect, sending the Cottagers into the semi-finals.

Dyche said: "Everyone has a style of penalty which they think can score. His record has been very strong in all the rounds and when we've practised them. That's his style.

"If you are brave enough to get up there and take one then you have to be brave enough for the consequences.

"The first question is always, 'Who doesn't want to take one?' Simple as that because you need to want to take one. I'm pleased to say the whole group said they would take one.

"It is the moment of truth — the ball's there, you have to put it in the net."

Band of brothers

Chelsea striker Armando Broja says their dramatic victory over Newcastle is a sign the team are beginning to gel.

Broja, 22, came on as an early substitute for Enzo Fernandez during the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Stamford Bridge.

He said: "Games like this show our spirit and the bond where we dug deep.

"We got the equaliser even though it was in the 92nd minute and we got to penalties.

"We're a new team, with a new manager and everyone's trying to gel together. It's not going to be easy straight away because we have a whole bunch of new players, so we need to get that rhythm and get that bond together.

"It's not going to happen overnight and people need to understand that. We keep playing for the badge."

Deeney's Forest Green

League Two side Forest Green have confirmed the appointment of Troy Deeney as their new head coach after parting ways with David Horseman and Louis Carey.

Deeney, 35, joined the club earlier in the season and took up the role of a part-time player and coach.

The former Birmingham and Watford striker said: "I am very pleased and honoured to be appointed as the new head coach. I know the fans will have many questions, which will be answered as soon as possible. 

"We will not hide from the task at hand and will be open and honest along the way.

"One thing I can assure everyone is that we will work our very hardest to bring this wonderful club back to success. 

"This is an exciting new role with many challenges that I'll embrace and there's a lot of work for us to do, which has already started. I look forward to welcoming fans to our home game this Friday against Gillingham."

Call on experience

Emma Hayes has called on Chelsea to use their experience as they prepare to face BK Hacken in the Champions League.

The Blues were held to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge last week but have another shot at beating the Swedish side and claiming top spot in Group D.

Hayes said: "Every game is a must-win game for us, that is our mentality. 

"We were disappointed with our performance last week. We worked on that, trained really well, played well at the weekend. 

"This place will be rocking tomorrow night. This is going to be a difficult place to play. We are playing an opponent who are very confident in what they're doing. 

"We have experience and we need to use it. 

"The message I'll give to the players is we have been in this competition long enough, we've gone deep in this competition and while it hasn't been perfect in the group stages, we have a dressing room that is capable of winning."

Carrick's call to arms

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick has urged his players to make the most of their cup run after defeating Port Vale.

The Championship side will face one of Chelsea, Liverpool, West Ham or Fulham in the Carabao Cup semi-finals and the former England international is relishing the challenge.

He said: "Sometimes in your career there are times and you have to make the most of the opportunity when it comes your way. 

"When the door opens you have to run through it and the boys certainly sprinted through it. 

"We're not stupid. We know whoever's left in the draw probably wants to play us and see it as a chance to get to Wembley. 

"It's a hell of an opportunity. It's about us and what we can achieve. You're in a semi-final and it’s motivation and inspiration itself."

Road to recovery

Arsenal duo Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema have opened up on their recovery after both picking up anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in the last year.

Mead, 28, and Miedema, 27, are both back fit and firing for the Gunners this season but have joined forces to create a new docuseries titled 'Step by Step'.

Mead said: "It wasn't nice having the job I love taken away from me for an extended period of time, but my perspective is everything happens for a reason. 

"It gave me some special time with my mum and my perspective was that I will come back from this injury."

Miedema added: "Last year, when everyone had the injuries, everyone stepped up on the pitch.

"But for us, the most beautiful thing was any time we needed anything, everyone would be ready to help us out. In the end it gave everyone a bit of motivation. It's definitely bought the team closer together."
