Full of confidence

Mauricio Pochettino believes Chelsea are in good shape ahead of their first Premier League game of the season against Liverpool on Sunday.

Poch oversaw three wins and two draws as a successful pre-season tour of the United States saw the Blues win the first-ever Premier League Summer Series.

And the Argentine, 51, is confident his new-look squad will quickly erase the bitter memory of last season's dismal 12th-place finish in the top flight.

He said: "We are in a good way. I think we are building something special.

"It's a process and we need time — but in football you cannot ask for time. You need to deliver from now.

"We know we are Chelsea and even if young players are involved against Liverpool, the mentality is to win."

Never say die

Fabio Vieira feels a never-say-die spirit saw Arsenal beat Manchester City in the Community Shield yesterday.

The Gunners saw off the Treble winners 4-1 on penalties after the season curtain-raiser finished 1-1 at Wembley.

And Vieira, 23, believes the victory will give Mikel Arteta's squad the confidence they need going into their first Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The scorer of the winning penalty told Arsenal.com: "We are a team that will always believe it's possible to score until the final [minute] and we believed that we would score. Then in the penalties, we were better.

"It was a very good moment for me in front of our fans. We have a new season ahead — it will be very difficult and we need to be together with the fans."

New deal

Frank Onyeka has signed a new four-year contract with Brentford.

The Nigeria midfielder, 25, has made 41 Premier League appearances since joining the Bees from Midtjylland in 2021.

Boss Thomas Frank said: "I'm very pleased Frank has signed a new contract. He has helped the team a lot during our time in the Premier League.

"During both seasons he has been unlucky with injuries, which have prevented him from taking an even bigger step forward in terms of minutes, but I really like his energy.

"Frank is a great pressing player. He's a very important player for us and we're looking forward to continuing the journey with him."

Theatre of Dreams

Manchester United will host Manchester City at Old Trafford in a Women's Super League clash for the first time in November.

The match, scheduled for November 19, will be the fourth WSL game played at the Theatre of Dreams in front of fans.

City’s Etihad Stadium will then host the Manchester derby for a second successive season on the weekend of March 23-24 after last term's fixture attracted a club-record attendance of 44,259.

United boss Marc Skinner said: "These fixtures represent one of the biggest rivalries in world football and it is fitting that both games will take place in stadiums that provide more fans with the opportunity to attend and support us.

"Women's football is again capturing the nation and playing these matches at grounds like Old Trafford and the Etihad can only add to the ever-increasing profile of the club, the WSL and the women's game in general."

Record breaking

The Women's World Cup has surpassed the previous best attendance record for the tournament.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said: "There have been 12 matches with attendances of over 40,000 to date, showing this Women's World Cup has shifted from being a team-supported tournament to a globally-followed event.

"This is why we are witnessing the greatest FIFA Women's World Cup ever — and a record breaking one."
