Moyes questions level of refereeing as Hammers held at Blades

David Moyes has questioned the standard of Premier League refereeing following West Ham's 2-2 draw at Sheffield United.

Moyes' men twice took the lead at Bramall Lane and were handed a man advantage when Blades substitute Rhian Brewster was sent off in second-half stoppage time.

But Vladimir Coufal's second booking cancelled out the numerical advantage before Oli McBurnie struck a penalty in the 103rd minute to ensure the points were shared.

West Ham also thought they should have been awarded a late penalty after Jarrod Bowen went down in the area.

Hammers boss Moyes told BBC Sport: "I'm not going to come out and say too much because we're the ones that get in trouble.

"We'd like to but I think we're getting to a stage now, the managers, where we're seeing a level of officiating where we're all just shrugging our shoulders saying, 'This is what we're getting now'.

"Disappointed in the end because we should have comfortably got ourselves three points today. I see it as two points dropped."

Maxwel Cornet broke the deadlock in South Yorkshire in the 28th minute yet the hosts went into half-time on equal terms thanks to loanee Ben Brereton Diaz's first goal for the club.

James Ward-Prowse's 79th-minute penalty looked to have bagged the Irons all three points but the late drama ensured Moyes was left to rue his side's failure to see out the win.

The Glaswegian, 60, added: "We should've done better, we had 11 vs 10. We got caught with the ball in midfield and go down to 10 men.

"I don't know if it's enough for a booking but the referee gave it. 10 vs 10 should still have been fine. We shouldn't concede from that point.

"Absolutely not pleased with the performance at all. I thought our passing in the first half was so poor, probably as bad as we've been with the ball.

"Generally, our performance was not at the levels we want."

The East Londoners head into their winter break in eighth spot in the Premier League table while rock-bottom Sheffield United are back in action next Saturday when they host Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round.
