England are the defending Women’s European champions but they face a tough task to retain their crown this year, with the team that beat them in the World Cup final two years ago favourites to win this tournament.

The Lionesses have been inconsistent since then, losing to Germany, Belgium and Spain but picking up some high-scoring wins over lower-ranked teams.

Spain could prove too strong

While there are plenty of candidates to win this year’s Women’s Euros, they all lack the credentials of Spain.

La Roja won the World Cup two years ago and have been in very solid form in 2025, with their only disappointment a narrow defeat to England at Wembley in February.

Their attacking talents are such that they netted 21 times in six games in the recent Nations League campaign, including a 7-1 defeat of Portugal who they meet again in the group stages.

Spain boast 10 players who play their club football for Barcelona, who have been the dominant force in European women’s football recently.

The Catalan club have won two of the last three Women’s Champions Leagues and were beaten in the final by Arsenal last season.

England played just about as well as they could in the World Cup final and still fell short, so it is not hard to see why Spain are favourites.

Two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati has recovered from a bout of meningitis and that could be crucial.

Hard to keep Swedes down

Sweden may not dominate women’s football as they once did but their consistency is remarkable and they continue to have deep runs at major tournaments.

They have finished third in three of the last four World Cups and have picked up silver medals in two of the last three Olympic Games.

To add to that, they have reached at least the semi-finals in six of the last eight European Championships and it is clear that they are not a team to be underestimated.

The Swedes are unbeaten in their last 12 games, including wins over Norway, Italy and a draw with England, and could put in a big run.
