- Italy began their Women’s Euros campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Belgium

Italy to win to nil

Portugal and Italy enjoyed contrasting starts to the 2025 Women’s European Championship and it could be much of the same for the pair when they clash in Geneva on Monday.

Italy know another win will likely see them progress as the team they defeated on Matchday One, Belgium, face the tournament favourites prior to this match at Stade de Geneve.

Portugal, meanwhile, were routed 5-0 by Spain in their opener and, having suffered a plethora of other heavy defeats before that, it is hard to see them having the required confidence left to bounce back against Le Azzurre.

Team news

Barcelona star Kika Nazareth has only just returned from a lengthy injury and was not risked against Spain. However, with Portugal needing a win to progress, she may feature against Italy even if she is not yet fully fit.

Italy have no injury concerns and Andrea Soncin may be reluctant to make any changes after Le Azzurre’s opening victory over Belgium.

The stats

Francisco Neto's Portugal are struggling at both ends of the pitch and do not look in good enough form to trouble Italy

Portugal are without a win in six matches, having lost five times in that run while conceding an eye-watering 25 goals.

Italy are on a four-match unbeaten run which includes three wins.

Soncin’s side have also kept an impressive three clean sheets in that run.

Portugal have failed to score in four straight games.

Italy have won all six head-to-heads, although the last meeting was back in 2020.

Prediction

An opening 5-0 defeat to neighbours Spain was hardly the start Portugal would have hoped for in Switzerland but, in reality, it probably should have been expected, and not only because La Roja are the tournament favourites.

The Portuguese had shipped 20 goals while winning none of their five games prior to that defeat and it is not only their defence which is a huge issue, as a misfiring attack is causing all sorts of problems too.

Francisco Neto’s side have now failed to score in four straight games and managing just one shot on target and 0.33 expected goals against Spain does not bode well for their clash with Italy.

Le Azzurre’s 1-0 victory over Belgium was far from spectacular, but they will not have to be spectacular to beat a poor Portugal side.

The Italians have kept three clean sheets during a four-game unbeaten run and should win in Geneva without having to break a sweat defensively.
