Tottenham Hotspur vs AFC Bournemouth predictions: Distracted Spurs may be vulnerable

- Tottenham have won only one of their last nine home league games
- Bournemouth have lost only one their last eight away league outings
- Recommended bet: Bournemouth draw no bet

Tottenham will be hoping that the Europa League can salvage what has been a bitterly disappointing season and their quest for continental silverware could leave them vulnerable in Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Bournemouth.

That is because Spurs trail AZ Alkmaar 1-0 ahead of Thursday’s last-16 second leg at home and that is an unwelcome distraction as they bid to improve upon their lowly 13th-placed position in the Premier League.

Bournemouth, meanwhile, will still be believing that they can convert their seventh-placed position into European football next season, despite the fact that they have lost three of their last four top-flight fixtures.

But Spurs have had only a three-day turnaround from their slender defeat in the Netherlands and consistency has been hard for them to find domestically.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have won only one of their last nine home league games, whereas Bournemouth have excelled on their league travels with just two defeats in 10.

Team news

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is expected to be fit to face his former club despite being substituted in the defeat at AZ Alkmaar, but Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison and Radu Dragusin remain sidelined.

Defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are pushing for a return but that Europa League second leg with AZ may take priority.

Bournemouth midfielder Ryan Christie could return having struggled with a thigh issue, but Illia Zabarnyi serves the final game of his suspension and Enes Unal, Marcos Senesi, Julian Araujo and Adam Smith are injured.

The stats

Bournemouth are bidding for a first league double over Spurs, following their 1-0 win at the Vitality Stadium in December.

Tottenham's 1-0 loss at AZ Alkmaar in midweek was their 18th reverse this season in all competitions.

Spurs have won only one of their last nine home league games, losing against bottom two Leicester and Ipswich in that period.

Bournemouth have lost only one of their last eight away league games, winning five of those matches including at Manchester United and Newcastle.

Both teams have scored in 11 of Bournemouth’s 14 away league games this season.

Ten of Justin Kluivert's 12 league goals this season for Bournemouth have come away from home.

Prediction

Injuries have not helped their cause but Tottenham have lost 14 of their 27 league games this season and they will surely have more focus on Thursday’s Europa League last-16 visit from AZ Alkmaar.

Having suffered defeats in six of their last nine home league matches, Bournemouth ought to fancy their chances of bolstering what has been a fantastic campaign under Andoni Iraola.

The Cherries started the weekend in seventh, only four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, and they have lost only one of their last eight away league games.

Bournemouth have drawn at Chelsea and won at Manchester United and Newcastle in that run and, perhaps fresher and more focused than Spurs, they look the most likely victors in this contest.
