Watford have gone from play-off contenders to potential relegation candidates after a miserable start to 2024 and they will be aiming to stop the rot when facing Coventry at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets have not won a home league game since November, but they did come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against Swansea on Wednesday.

While Watford are looking nervously over their shoulders, Coventry remain in the play-off hunt after Tuesday’s 5-0 success at home to Rotherham.

The Sky Blues are only three points outside the top six, although they haven’t won back-to-back league games since January.

Team news

Watford right back Jeremy Ngakia (knee) faces an estimated four-week spell on the sidelines and Ken Sema is a major doubt after he was forced off inside the first half of Wednesday’s 1-1 draw at home to Swansea.

Daniel Bachmann was handed the gloves against Swansea and should keep his place at the expense of Ben Hamer.

Coventry are short of options in midfield with Ben Sheaf (hamstring) and Jamie Allen (cheekbone) on the sidelines.

The Sky Blues went with a front two for the midweek victory over Rotherham and may continue with the same approach, allowing Ellis Simms and Haji Wright to team up at the sharp end.

The stats

Watford have not won any of their last eight home games and have conceded the first goal in seven of their last eight fixtures.

Valerien Ismael’s side have not kept a home clean sheet in 11 attempts.

Coventry have won five of their last eight games and nine of their last 10 matches have generated at least three goals.

Prediction

Coventry have not won back-to-back league games since January, but they can complete a six-point week by defeating Watford at Vicarage Road.

The Sky Blues have been inside the top ten since New Year’s Day and are in with a decent chance of reaching the play-offs for a second successive season.

They have lacked a regular goalscorer, but that may change after Ellis Simms scored a hat-trick in Tuesday’s 5-0 triumph at home to Rotherham, having also bagged a treble in the 5-0 FA Cup win over Maidstone.

Watford have been unconvincing in all aspects in recent months.

The Hertfordshire side have picked up just four points from their last seven matches and their struggles will offer plenty of encouragement to Coventry, who look a solid bet to rack up a 15th league win.
