The battle for US Open glory begins on Thursday with a star-studded field descending upon the notoriously difficult Pinehurst Number Two course in North Carolina.

World number one Scottie Scheffler recorded his fifth win of the season at last week's Memorial Tournament and is the 10/3 favourite with LiveScore Bet to lift this trophy for the first time.

American Xander Schauffele broke his Major duck at last month's US PGA Championship and he is 11/1 to claim the spoils again, the same price as Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy.

Morikawa to move closer to Grand Slam

German Martin Kaymer blitzed the field to win by eight shots the last time Pinehurst staged the US Open, but he was just one of three players to shoot under-par and that highlights just how difficult this course is.

With massive run-offs and undulating greens, approach play will be crucial to success and Collin Morikawa has been showing the kind of form of late that helped him to Major victories in 2020 and 2021.

The 27-year-old American's last six results read T3-ninth-T16-T4-fourth and second, with two of those efforts coming in the Masters and the US PGA and he looks back to his best.

Morikawa's approach play has been in solid shape during those tournaments and the improvement on the greens also aids his chances of landing a third Major this week.

Conners to break Major duck

One player looking to land his first Major is Canadian Corey Conners and his accurate approach play should stand him in good stead for a big challenge this week.

The 32-year-old is third in greens in regulation and second in strokes gained: approach on the PGA Tour this season, while his last four starts have seen him finish T13, T26, sixth and T20.

Conners seems to be on the cusp of putting it all together and US Open glory could be heading his way.

Sungjae to be in the mix

The final selection is Sungjae Im, another player aiming to break his Major duck and he has roared back into life in recent weeks after a disappointing start to the campaign.

South Korea's star returned to the winners' circle when retaining his Woori Financial Group Championship title on the Korean Tour and he has kept the momentum going back on the US circuit, going T4-MC-T9 and T8.

Sungjae's precise approach play has been in full swing of late and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix come Sunday.
