Watford double chance

Southampton are 10 points shy of the top two in the Championship, but with two games in hand they still hold some hope of going up automatically.

However, there is little room for error for Russell Martin’s side, who face a tricky encounter with Watford this weekend.

The Hornets may be languishing in mid-table, but their latest managerial sacking has sparked an upturn in form.

Team news

Southampton head into this clash without Juan Larios and Ross Stewart and they may need some rotation following their midweek clash with Coventry.

Watford’s interim boss Tom Cleverley is likely to stick with the side which frustrated Ipswich in midweek, with the visitors out to maintain a good run of form.

The stats

Watford have lost only three of 10 visits to the top 12 and have lost just two of their 13 away trips since the start of December.

These two sides have drawn three of their four meetings this term and the visitors have drawn with three of the top five in their last four games.

Southampton have won two of their last five at home and are without a clean sheet in their last six home matches.

Prediction

Southampton’s 2-1 win over Coventry in midweek has kept them in the promotion mix, but the Saints could be frustrated by Cleverley’s Watford.

The visitors have put together a five-game unbeaten run, which has seen them hold three of the league’s top five to a stalemate in their last four matches.

While Watford’s latest sacking came in March on the back of some poor results, they have only lost twice on the road in the league since the start of December. They have also avoided defeat in seven of their 10 visits to the top 12, so they have the tools to trouble the promotion-hopefuls.

Southampton have had a couple of missteps in recent weeks, as their win over Coventry ended a three-game spell without a victory.

They have also managed only two wins across their last five at St Mary’s, falling to defeats to both Hull City and Millwall in that stretch.

The hosts have conceded in their last six home games and Watford head into this trip on the back of consecutive clean sheets. The Hornets have conceded just three times across their last five away trips and could dig in and make this difficult for Saints.

With Watford recently proving themselves against some of the best sides in the Championship, they appeal in the double chance market this weekend.
