Burns on fire

In a PGA Tour season that has already produced a string of feel-good results, Sam Burns added his name to the list by landing his maiden senior title at the Valspar Championship on Sunday. 

Burns, 24, finished three shots ahead of former champion Keegan Bradley at Innisbrook to secure an emotional victory — one the Louisiana native had been threatening to deliver for some time. 

After failing to convert 54-hole leads at both the Houston Open and the Genesis Invitational, big-hitting Burns was beginning to harbour a reputation in some quarters as an unreliable closer. 

However, speaking after his weekend triumph, he claimed those near misses had given him vital experience that helped get the job done in Florida. 

Holding back the tears, Burns said: "This is really a dream come true. 

"Those moments in the past test you and you really learn a lot from them, so I think this week, coming down the stretch, we just tried to stick to our process. 

"My caddy did a really good job of just keeping me focused in the moment and trusting our process. He deserves a lot of credit, too. 

"My family have always been there through it all. I was just really happy they were here to see that.

"We’re working hard for those moments, to have a chance on the back nine. Then just to see how your game holds up in those situations. I loved the pressure. It was awesome."

Burns and Bradley were locked in battle throughout the weekend, with the latter’s double bogey on the par-three 13th proving to be the decisive moment as the eventual winner kept his cool to capitalise.

Norwegian star Viktor Hovland shared third spot with Cameron Tringale after an excellent closing round of 65, while Mexico's Abraham Ancer rounded off the top five. 

Burmester’s blitz

Another Canary Islands-based event, another South African winner — Dean Burmester destroyed the field in the Tenerife Open, just seven days after countryman Garrick Higgo did the same in Las Palmas. 

It was a ruthless second European Tour success for Burmester, 31, who rarely looked in danger as he posted a sublime bogey-free round of 62 to power clear of his rivals. 

Starting Sunday a solitary shot behind co-leaders Nicolai Von Dellingshausen and Kalle Samooja, the South African rattled through his first seven holes five strokes under par and kept his foot on the gas to close out what was a bloodless success. 

It was a performance that even impressed the man himself — and earned him a two-year exemption that will allow for a much-needed trip home. 

Burmester said: "There's no words that can describe it.

"It's the result of four years of struggle and hard work. To go bogey-free today is world class. 

"This win means I can go home and see my family. I cannot wait to see them now. 

"With the coronavirus situation and other things I wasn’t sure when my next chance to see them would be. It’s super emotional, to be honest." 

German Von Dellingshausen did manage to eagle the last and secure a career-best second, with Samooja and Polish star Adrian Meronk one shot back in joint third and recent Austrian Open winner John Catlin a further stroke behind in fifth.

The week ahead

A strong PGA Tour field heads to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship, with all the entrants looking to fine-tune their games as the year’s second Major draws closer. 

The US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island is now only a fortnight away and the likes of John Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau re-emerge from short breaks in what looks sure to be a fiercely competitive event. 

Meanwhile, the European Tour’s stars will enjoy one last taste of Gran Canaria life before the British Masters at the Tenerife Championship at Golf Costa Adeje — the same venue as last week’s event.
