Golf’s elite assemble in Dublin, Ohio this week for the latest and penultimate PGA Tour signature event of 2024, where Viktor Hovland will defend his Memorial title.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is understandably favourite, while Rory McIlroy will be looking to build upon his fourth spot at last week’s Canadian Open, but there could be more value to be had a little further down the list.

Cantlay's Muirfield record is hard to ignore

One player who ticks a lot of boxes this week is Patrick Cantlay, despite the fact that it is almost two years since he tasted victory on the PGA Tour.

The cause of much enthusiasm is his excellent record at Muirfield Village, where he tasted victory in this tournament in both 2019 and 2021, so there could be no better location for him to make a strong challenge for his ninth tour title.

Those were not isolated efforts either as he has also finished third and fourth in this tournament and posted seventh place when the Ohio track hosted the Workday Charity Open.

Despite his recent inability to get in the winners’ circle, Cantlay has reserved some of his best performances for the signature events, having finished fourth at the Genesis Invitational and third at the RBC Heritage.

So he can come alive both in these surroundings and in this company and we could witness a strong performance from him this week.

Sam Burns appears to be finding some form as he prepares to tee off at the Memorial Tournament.

Burns is finding some decent form

Sam Burns could also offer some outright value.

The 27-year-old has already won five times on the PGA Tour and there are signs that his game is getting back to its best after he followed a 13th spot at the Wells Fargo Championship with tenth last week in Canada.

He claimed 16th at the Memorial last year, which was his best performance at the Ohio track and he can make a mockery of his odds if his sharp putting continues.

Horschel can battle into top ten

Billy Horschel is one of the PGA Tour’s toughest competitors and, while he won the low-grade Corales Puntacana in April, he can also get the job done in elite company.

He was eighth at the recent US PGA Championship and had claimed two Memorial top-tens before a four-shot victory at the venue in 2022, so expect him to get into the top ten again this week.
