Manchester United will aim to return to winning ways on Thursday when they entertain Lyon at Old Trafford in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.

The Red Devils left the Groupama Stadium with a 2-2 draw last week, with goalkeeper Andre Onana criticised for his performance in France.

Onana was subsequently dropped for Sunday's clash with Newcastle United, but reserve goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to impress in the 4-1 defeat at St James' Park, adding to the uncertainty around Ruben Amorim's squad.

Amorim's Lyon counterpart Paulo Fonseca might be serving a lengthy domestic touchline ban but his team continued their recent momentum by winning 3-1 at Auxerre on Sunday to move up to fourth in Ligue 1 and they have every chance of causing United further problems on Thursday.

Team News

Manchester United centre-back Matthijs de Ligt is expected to miss out on Thursday due to injury, while he is joined in the treatment room by Joshua Zirkzee, Amad Diallo, Jonny Evans and Lisandro Martinez.

Lyon's Paul Akouokou will need to be assessed after suffering a knock in the first leg, while Malick Fofana and Ernest Nuamah have already been ruled out for the season.

The stats

Amorim's Manchester United are winless in four, with their last success coming against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium before the international break.

The Red Devils have been harder to beat at home, though, losing just one of their last six at Old Trafford.

Lyon will head to Manchester in high spirits, with the French club only losing one of their last nine games.

Away from home, Lyon have scored two or more goals in six consecutive matches.

United's defensive woes do not look like they will come to an end anytime soon and it may be next season when Amorim finally gets his team to stop the rot at the back.

With Onana and Bayindir both low on confidence, Lyon will expect to trouble their hosts and their recent away form suggests they could rack up the goals at Old Trafford.

United need to win the Europa League to have any chance of playing European football next season, but Lyon are capable of spoiling their dreams.

Les Gones have really found their groove of late and playmaker Rayan Cherki will be eager to impress on the big stage once again, having scored in last week's 2-2 draw.

Lyon have netted at least two goals in 13 consecutive matches and it is that form that suggests they will avoid defeat at Old Trafford this week, with extra time a real possibility.
