- Six of RB Leipzig’s last eight matches have featured at least three goals
- Manchester City have won five of their last six Champions League fixtures by at least two goals
- Recommended bet: Man City to win and over 2.5 goals

Manchester City were left feeling short-changed after back-to-back Premier League draws, but they have a faultless record in Champions League Group G and will be aiming to secure top spot with a home win over RB Leipzig.

Both teams have already qualified for the second round, but the race for first place could go down to the wire if RB Leipzig are successful at the Etihad.

The Germans are fifth in the Bundesliga after returning from the international break with a 2-1 loss at Wolfsburg.

City’s 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool was disappointing but it extended their unbeaten run to seven matches.

Team news

Manchester City will have to assess Jack Grealish, who missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool due to illness.

Mateo Kovacic (thigh) and Matheus Nunes (unspecified injury) were also absent at the weekend, while Kevin De Bruyne (hamstring) is a long-term absentee.

RB Leipzig could be without Timo Werner (thigh), who was not part of the group which lost 2-1 at Wolfsburg on Saturday.

Dani Olmo (shoulder) and Willi Orban (knee) are longer-term absentees and neither is expected to reappear in Manchester.

The stats

City’s 17-match unbeaten run in the Champions League stretches back to May 2021 when they suffered a 3-1 extra-time defeat in their semi-final, second leg away to Real Madrid.

The Citizens have won all of their last six Champions League matches and five of those successes have been by at least two goals.

City have kept just two clean sheets in their last 11 matches.

Seven of RB Leipzig’s last eight Champions League games have featured at least three goals and both teams have scored in each of Leipzig’s last three fixtures.

RB Leipzig have won seven of their last eight Champions League group stage matches, but the exception was a 3-1 loss at home to City.

Prediction

Manchester City have won their Champions League section six times in a row and they can achieve an unassailable position in Group G with a high-scoring victory over RB Leipzig.

Pep Guardiola declared himself happy with City’s performance after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Liverpool and he will be after a similarly high standard and a very different result against Leipzig, who have been City’s strongest opposition within a fairly weak section.

Leipzig were delighted to qualify with two games to spare, but they were beaten 3-1 by City on matchday two (losing the shot count 18 to three), and are unlikely to be any more competitive at the Etihad.

Leipzig will carry a threat thanks to the pace and quality of Belgian forward Lois Openda and the creative spark of Dutch attacker Xavi Simons.

But they have not kept an away clean sheet in six attempts and are highly likely to ship a few more goals against arguably the top team in the competition.
