Only seven women have won the French Open in their teenage years, but 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva has had a fantastic tournament and is odds-on to get the better of Jasmine Paolini in their final four clash.

Andreeva came through a tough three-set quarter-final clash against second seed Aryna Sabalenka and aims to become the youngest Grand Slam semi-finalist since 1997 when a 16-year-old Martina Hingis achieved the feat at the French Open and the US Open.

While Andreeva is seeking to make a splash near the start of her career, late bloomer Paolini is aiming to reach a first Grand Slam final at the age of 28.

The Italian took advantage of a kind draw before recording a surprise 6-2 4-6 6-4 victory over fourth seed Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals.

Paolini is already assured of moving into the top ten for the first time in her career, but she will be desperate to advance a step further and become only the third Italian to reach the French Open final in the Open era – following in the footsteps of 2010 champion Francesca Schiavone and 2012 runner-up Sara Errani.

The stats

Mirra Andreeva is aiming to become the first player to reach her first tour level final at Roland Garros.

Andreeva has registered three victories over top ten players and all of them were achieved this year.

Andreeva has won 14 of 18 Grand Slam matches, while Paolini has won eight of her last nine Grand Slam matches.

The Italian has never been ranked higher than 12th, but is assured of moving into the top ten from the start of next week.

Until her run to the Australian Open fourth round this year, Paolini had never advanced beyond the second round at any Grand Slam.

Prediction

Andreeva has the tools to be an outstanding player for years to come and she can advance to her first Grand Slam final with a straight sets victory over Paolini.

Playing on the big stage seems to come naturally to the teenager, who showed strength of character by coming from a set behind to defeat Sabalenka on Wednesday.

Andreeva opened up her French Open campaign with a dominant 6-2 6-3 success over American Emina Bektas and has continued to play at a consistently high level.

She can come up with the answers against Paolini, who is playing the best tennis of her career in her late-twenties.

Paolini broke into the top 30 in 2023 and continues to make rapid progress, but she has benefited from a favourable draw in the French capital.

The Italian overcame a below-par Rybakina in the quarter-finals, but faces a potentially tougher test against Andreeva and may struggle to win a set.
