Gunning for City

Declan Rice highlighted the importance of closing the gap to Manchester City after Arsenal's dramatic 3-1 victory over Manchester United.

The Gunners' marquee summer signing scored in the 96th minute to make it 2-1, before Gabriel Jesus sealed the win with his first strike of the season.

Rice's effort came a short time after Alejandro Garnacho had a goal disallowed for offside following a VAR review.

After the game, the England international said: "If I am speaking honestly, Man City have won four out of four and if we didn't win today, we are already five points behind them.

"To catch up on them is a massive margin to make. We couldn't afford to have that distance after four games so it was a must-win game, we said that before the game."

Arsenal sit fifth in the Premier League table going into the international break, two points behind leaders City.

Onana's return

Andre Onana has confirmed he will represent Cameroon moving forward.

The Manchester United goalkeeper, 27, retired from international duty following a disagreement with manager Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup.

But he is set to play for the Indomitable Lions again, writing in a statement on social media: "I answer my nation's call with unshakeable certainty, aware that my return is not only to honour my dream but also to respond to the expectations and support of Cameroonians, who deserve a national team determined to shine.

"In the face of manipulation, lies and abuse of power, I choose to remain true to my ideals, proudly representing a country that deserves our sincere commitment. Now is the time to unite, to work in harmony for our common good: Cameroon."

Cameroon play Burundi next Tuesday in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier and if they emerge victorious, Onana could miss a significant chunk of the campaign with United due to the scheduling of the tournament in Ivory Coast — which begins on January 13.

Lyon roar

Lyon players were criticised by club ultras after their 4-1 defeat at home to champions Paris Saint-Germain.

A brace from Kylian Mbappe and goals from Achraf Hakimi and Marco Asensio — all scored in the first half at the Groupama Stadium — sealed an emphatic victory for Luis Enrique's side.

After the game, Laurent Blanc's men went over to face up to their supporters and were met with some scathing words by a figure in the crowd with a megaphone.

They said: "To you, the Lyon 2023-2024 squad, this message is addressed to you, to some of you already, to those who assume the status of dressing room leaders.

"The message is clear, if there are leaders in this dressing room, they no longer have the right to remain silent. You're wearing the Lyon jersey.

"Others before you have worn it, glorified it. You don't have the right to tarnish it. Now that the transfer window is over, the squad is here. All we ask is to be by your side."

Salah saga

Dominik Szoboszlai says Mohamed Salah wants to remain at Liverpool despite bids from Saudi side Al-Ittihad.

The Reds have already rejected two offers for their talisman, worth a reported £150million and £170m.

Both Szoboszlai and Salah scored in Liverpool's 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

On the transfer rumours swirling around the Egyptian ace, midfield maestro Szoboszlai said: "Of course we are talking about it to each other.

"But he wants to stay and be here so we are happy. He is a great person and we need guys like that."

Al-Ittihad could return with an increased bid before the Saudi transfer window closes on Thursday.

Blues building

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes is keen for her players to get back up to the required level following their thrilling 3-2 pre-season triumph over Roma.

Goals from Guro Reiten, Lauren James and Aggie Beever-Jones secured victory for the Women's Super League champions at Kingsmeadow.

After the game, Hayes said: "We scheduled the minutes for everyone. We just need to get everyone back up to a level.

"We haven't had the whole team together yet, so we need everyone back together first and then build them back into the Chelsea way.

"Some have only had two training sessions, so we just need a bit more time on the grass."

Hayes' double winners continue their 2023-24 preparations when they depart for a pre-season training camp in Portugal on Tuesday.

Ruthless Red Devils

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner has urged his team to be more ruthless in the final third after their 1-0 win over Everton in pre-season.

The Red Devils dominated the fixture and created a host of chances but had to settle for just the one goal, scored by Leah Galton.

Skinner said after the match: "With the ball, I thought we were ruthless up until the final third and then we need to be a little bit more ruthless in the box.

"We spoke at half-time about punishing them when they give us the ball, or when we force them to give us the ball.

"I think we could have been a little bit better than that. But it’s about trying to get minutes in legs. As they get fitter they will be better at that."
