United front

Rasmus Hojlund has called for unity at Manchester United after their woeful start to the season continued against Galatasaray.

The Red Devils were beaten 3-2 by the Turkish outfit at Old Trafford last night in what was a sixth defeat in 10 games across all competitions, piling more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

And though Hojlund twice fired the hosts in front during an impressive showing, the 20-year-old Dane was unable to take much pleasure from the occasion.

He said: "Of course it's not about the individual performance. It's about getting the three points and at the moment we're not doing good enough.

"We've had a few games now where they just score after we scored. We need to go back and analyse that tomorrow and talk about it in the group.

"It is a tough period now but we need to stick together and that's the only way we can get out of this period."

Luckless Buk

Mikel Arteta was unable to shed any further light on the injury which forced Bukayo Saka off during Arsenal's 2-1 Champions League defeat at Lens.

The England ace set up Gabriel Jesus for the opening goal of the contest but was replaced by Fabio Vieira after 34 minutes.

Adrien Thomasson and Elye Wahi strikes eventually condemned the Gunners to a surprise loss and Arteta admitted the condition of his No7 was giving him cause for concern.

The Spaniard said: "He tried to backheel a ball in the first half and felt something muscular. He felt uncomfortable to carry on so we had to take him off.

"We don't know anything more. It was big enough not to allow him to continue to play the game and that's a worry for us.

"It was a big Champions League night — so difficult to win away from home. Today we take a big lesson."

Pep talk

Pep Guardiola has no concerns over Erling Haaland's form in front of goal.

The Norwegian sensation, 23, has faced some scrutiny for spurning chances in recent weeks and drew a rare blank against Wolves last time out.

But as he prepares for tonight's Champions League clash with an RB Leipzig side he put five goals past last term, Haaland has received full backing from his boss.

Guardiola told reporters: "Yes, he had a lot of chances to score the goals. It gets more difficult with five defenders on the 18 yard box — but not just for him, for any player around the world.

"If you see the chances he's had and the goals he's scored, he's at the same level as last season."

Orient tragedy

Leyton Orient have paid tribute to supporter Derek Reynolds, who died after being taken unwell towards the end of the League One match against Lincoln on Tuesday night.

After fans had gone on to the pitch to alert the referee to the medical emergency in the East Stand, the match was halted in the 82nd minute and eventually abandoned.

The London Ambulance Service confirmed on Wednesday morning that despite extensive treatment at the scene, the 74-year-old had later been pronounced dead.

On Wednesday afternoon, Orient revealed plans to pay tribute to Reynolds at Saturday’s home game against Reading, with his family invited as guests of the club.

A club statement read: "Leyton Orient is devastated to confirm that supporter Derek Reynolds has passed away.

"Derek was a lifelong O's supporter and he lived in Osbourne Road, a short walk from the ground, for many years. As well as being a lifelong fan, Derek was heavily involved in the club and managed the club's tannoy system during the 1990s.

"We would, once again, like to thank Derek's fellow supporters for the way in which they conducted themselves on Tuesday night and acted to try and help the situation."

Good to see Lou

Louis van Gaal has returned to his former club Ajax in an advisory role.

The legendary tactician, 72, was last in charge of the Netherlands but resigned following their 2022 World Cup quarter-final penalty defeat to eventual champions Argentina.

Now, he is back at the club that he coached to three Eredivisie titles and a Champions League crown during a six-year stint between 1991 and 1997.

On joining Ajax, who sit 15th in the Dutch top tier after a dire start to the season, Van Gaal said: "I want to help Ajax.

"I'd like to bring in my football knowledge. We must find the way up again."

Not at the races

League One side Cheltenham equalled an English Football League record last night when failing to score for an 11th consecutive match.

The Robins were beaten 2-0 at home by fellow strugglers Fleetwood, drawing them level with the barren runs endured by Coventry in 1919-20 and Hartlepool in 1992-93.

Darrell Clarke's men — who have now had 103 shots this term without success — must now net against Derby on Saturday to avoid becoming outright holders of the unwanted feat.
