Messi divorce

Lionel Messi admits his final season at Paris Saint-Germain was marred by a fallout with a section of the club's supporters.

The Argentinian icon, 36, announced his decision to join MLS outfit Inter Miami earlier this month upon the expiration of his contract in the French capital.

Messi's two-year stint with Les Parisiens brought mixed fortunes on and off the pitch, with the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner now opting to speak out about those final months in France.

Messi said: "I think in the beginning it was something wonderful. But then some people started to treat me differently, a part of the Paris supporters.

"I think the vast majority still see me and treat me as they did at the beginning, but there was a fracture with a significant group of the Paris fans, which obviously wasn't my intention — far from it.

"It happened just as it had happened before with [Kylian] Mbappe, with Neymar. I know that's the way they behave.

"I'll take away with me the people who respected me, as I always respected everyone since I arrived and that's all."

Messi is expected to make his Inter Miami debut late next month, though no date has yet been officially announced.

Emile Smith Rowe England's Under-21s have their sights set on Euros success this summer.

Lee Carsley's Young Lions qualified for the quarter-finals with a group game to spare after consecutive 2-0 victories over the Czech Republic and Israel.

Germany are up next on Wednesday, where any positive result for Carsley's men would see England eliminate their old foes before the knockout rounds.

Arsenal ace Smith Rowe, who has netted in both outings so far, admits he and his team-mates are dreaming of lifting the trophy in Georgia next Saturday.

The 22-year-old explained: "We had that talk before we even came over here.

"We have the confidence that we want to make a statement in this tournament and believe that we can go all the way and win it.

"We just have to make sure we take each game as it comes."

Seventh heaven

Liverpool have announced that Luis Diaz will take their iconic No7 shirt next season.

James Milner has held the number since 2015 but he will leave Anfield and join Brighton next month upon expiration of his contract.

And Colombian forward Diaz, 26, has been confirmed as the new incumbent — with the Reds star vowing to personally refund any fans who have had his old No23 printed on their new jersey.

France international Christopher Nkunku officially joins Chelsea next week

Christopher Nkunku hopes to follow in the footsteps of Eden Hazard and Didier Drogba at Chelsea.

Nkunku's Stamford Bridge switch from RB Leipzig for a fee north of £50million was announced last week and the Frenchman will hope to help his new club improve on a dire 2022-23 campaign.

Asked which players sprung to mind when thinking of the Blues, Nkunku said: "I like Eden Hazard, for sure.

"I think, for me, he is a legend of Chelsea. I have played against Hazard in friendly games but I have never met these guys properly.

"And I obviously like Didier Drogba. My first memory of Chelsea is when they won the Champions League with Drogba, and Drogba ran with the cup."

Rob lands Tel Aviv job

Robbie Keane has been unveiled as the new manager of Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv.

The ex-Tottenham and Republic of Ireland striker, 42, is a surprise replacement for former Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka, who left the club yesterday.

Maccabi are 23-time champions in Israel but have now finished third in consecutive campaigns, behind Maccabi Haifa and Hapoel Be'er Sheva.

It is only Keane's second managerial stint after a short spell in charge of Indian Super League side ATK in 2018.
