Trent has high hopes

Trent Alexander-Arnold insists Liverpool cannot afford to finish outside the top four again next season.

The Reds missed out on Champions League qualification as they limped to fifth in the Premier League last term — finishing a whopping 22 points behind Treble winners Manchester City.

And Alexander-Arnold, 24, knows another disappointing campaign must be avoided at all costs.

Speaking exclusively to Sky Sports News, the England star said: "We want to be winning the league, we want to be challenging and being in title races and in Champions League football, so to not be in that next season is disappointing.

"We know how to win the league, we know how to challenge City and go toe to toe with them and you need to be near perfect throughout the season, so for us that's where our heads are at."

Blues loan out Fofana

David Datro Fofana has joined Union Berlin on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

The striker, 20, arrived at Stamford Bridge in January but barely got a look in as Graham Potter and then interim boss Frank Lampard opted to use him sparingly.

Fofana made his debut against Manchester City in the 4-0 FA Cup drubbing at the Etihad and went on to make three Premier League appearances.

Upon sealing his switch to the Bundesliga, he said: "Union have developed extremely strongly in the last few years and it excites me a lot to be a part of this in the coming season.

"The club made a long and hard effort to find me and now I want to repay that with good performances."

A brief statement on Chelsea's website added: "The Ivory Coast international will now continue his development with Union, who will compete in the Champions League for the first time in the club's history. Good luck, David!"

Young Lions flying high

Six of Lee Carsley's England stars have been named in UEFA's Team of the Tournament after winning the European Under-21 Championship.

The Young Lions beat Spain 1-0 last Saturday courtesy of a Curtis Jones goal to lift the trophy but needed a last-gasp penalty save from James Trafford to seal glory.

That duo, along with Levi Colwill, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, James Garner and Anthony Gordon — who was named Player of the Tournament — feature in the governing body's XI.

Team of the Tournament (in a 4-4-2 line-up): James Trafford (England), Juan Miranda (Spain), Levi Colwill (England), Taylor Harwood-Bellis (England), James Garner (England), Rodri (Spain), Antonio Blanco (Spain), Curtis Jones (England), Sergio Gomez (Spain), Abel Ruiz (Spain), Anthony Gordon (England).

Done deal

Aston Villa have signed defender Anna Patten on a permanent deal.

Patten, 24, previously enjoyed two spells on loan from Arsenal, the first in 2021-22 and then the whole of last season.

She made 33 appearances for Villa during those stays and has now been handed a three-year deal.

Boss Carla Ward said: "This is a huge signing for us. Patsy has had two successful loan spells and has already played a big part in our journey so far.

"We're delighted she's enjoyed her time here and wants to continue, as we see her playing a significant part in our next steps."

Patten helped Villa finish fifth in the Women's Super League last term.

Back in time

Crystal Palace have unveiled their new away kit for 2023-24 — and are set to wear it at Barnet this evening.

Roy Hodgson's Eagles will kick-off their pre-season fixtures in sky blue and white, which harks back to the club's origins from 1861, while the sash design first appeared in the 1970s.

The sash is printed with the words 'Crystal Palace Football Club Founded 1861' and the shirt is paired with white shorts and white socks topped by a blue band.

New face on Merseyside

Jenna Clark cannot wait to sample life in the Women's Super League after joining Liverpool from Glasgow City FC.

The Scotland defender, 21, won four league titles and the Scottish Cup during her time in Glasgow, making 137 appearances and scoring 28 goals.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, she said: "It's a bit surreal just now. I don't think it’s sunk in yet but it feels amazing.

"My dad's always been a Liverpool fan, as soon as Kenny Dalglish came here, so growing up there was only one team for me to support.

"I was here last year, my Christmas present from my girlfriend was an Anfield stadium tour, so to be here as a player and not just a fan is amazing.

"I wasn't letting my hopes get too high but once it became more real, I was just buzzing.

"It's something I'll never take for granted, getting this opportunity."
