The soon-to-be world number one Jannik Sinner takes on tournament favourite Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open semi-finals

- Carlos Alcaraz has lost two of his last three matches against Jannik Sinner
- Sinner is on a run of 12 consecutive wins at Grand Slam events
- Recommended bet:
Jannik Sinner to win

Carlos Alcaraz has had a sketchy, injury-interrupted season but he has excelled from the start of this year’s French Open and is odds-on to defeat Jannik Sinner and advance to his first Roland Garros final.

A right forearm injury has affected Alcaraz for much of the clay-court season, forcing him to withdraw from the Monte Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open and the Rome Masters.

But the 21-year-old has looked in excellent shape since his arrival in Paris and has advanced to the final four having dropped just one set.

Sinner’s progress has been just as impressive and he approaches the semi-finals knowing that a rise to world number one is assured whatever the outcome.

The Italian has claimed three titles this year, including a maiden Grand Slam success when he beat Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in the Australian Open final.

The stats

Jannik Sinner has won two of the last three matches between the players.

Sinner is on an eight-match winning streak and six of them have come in straight sets.

Both players have won a set in six of the nine previous meetings between the pair.

Carlos Alcaraz has won 10 of his last 11 matches at the French Open.

Alcaraz is a two-time Grand Slam champion and is bidding to make his first French Open final.

Prediction

Jannik Sinner has been the most consistent player on the ATP tour this year and can maintain his chances of back-to-back Grand Slam victories by defeating Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open semi-finals.

A blossoming rivalry is developing between Sinner and Alcaraz, who have faced each other eight times at senior ATP events and shared four victories each.

Their most memorable meeting to date came in the 2022 US Open quarter-finals which Alcaraz won 6-3 6-7 6-7 7-5 6-3 after saving a match point in the fourth set.

But Sinner has been the better player this year, winning titles at the Rotterdam Open and the Miami Masters to add to his breakthrough triumph over Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final.

Alcaraz defeated Sinner 1-6 6-3 6-2 at Indian Wells in March on his way to lifting the trophy.

But he has been dealing with a right forearm injury for much of the clay-court season and fitness concerns may resurface if he is dragged into a marathon match.

Sinner was the 6-7 6-1 6-1 victor in their only previous senior clay-court match — at the Croatia Open final in July 2022 — and he looks overpriced to win a fascinating contest on Friday.
