Bundesliga Matchday 14: Bayern back on top ahead of Werder clash

Bayern Munich are back on top of the Bundesliga — and they will be keen to fend off Werder Bremen to stay at the summit. 

Among those looking to keep the reigning champions on their toes are Borussia Dortmund, who are three points off the pace and visit an in-form Wolfsburg outfit. 

Second-placed Freiburg, meanwhile, are only a point behind Bayern but face a tricky trip to resurgent RB Leipzig. 

Union Berlin have been knocked off their perch and down into third — they will be keen to bounce back against Augsburg — while Eintracht Frankfurt can strengthen their top-four credentials at home to Hoffenheim.

Game of the week: Bayern Munich vs Werder Bremen (Tuesday, 7.30pm)

Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen are set for their 111th Bundesliga meeting — it is the most-played fixture in the competition's history. 

Recent results have certainly favoured the Bavarians, who are unbeaten in the last 29 clashes across all competitions (25 wins, four draws), scoring 88 goals and shipping just 19 in the process. 

Julian Nagelsmann's men go into this one in good form, winning each of their last eight games across all competitions — and scoring a whopping 41 Bundesliga goals, with 15 coming in their last three home outings. 

However, Werder are enjoying their best top-flight campaign for 11 years and boast Niclas Fullkrug, who has 10 goals and two assists in the league so far, in their ranks.

Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund (Tuesday, 5.30pm)

Borussia Dortmund will expect to claim all three points against Wolfsburg given the history between these two sides. 

In the Bundesliga, BVB have won each of the last eight contests and 13 of the last 14 (one draw), as well as winning the last seven away from home. 

Another loss would see Wolfsburg set negative club records for the longest run of defeats and home defeats against a single opponent. 

Both teams are in good form, with Edin Terzic's men on a three-game Bundesliga winning streak and a six-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

Niko Kovac's side are unbeaten in their last six in the league, recording victories and clean sheets in each of their previous two outings.

RB Leipzig vs Freiburg (Wednesday, 7.30pm)

Freiburg are just a point behind Bayern Munich and will be dreaming of moving above them if the league leaders drop points on Tuesday night. 

However, the Breisgau Brazilians face RB Leipzig, who they have never beaten away from home in the Bundesliga, next. 

Leipzig also have the joint-most points at home in the league this term (16) — but Freiburg's away record in the division this season is similarly unsurpassed (14 points). 

Both sides are enjoying strong runs, with Leipzig unbeaten in their last 11 across all competitions (nine wins, two draws), while Freiburg's haul of 27 points is their best-ever total in the Bundesliga at this stage of the season.

Union Berlin vs Augsburg (Wednesday, 7.30pm)

Union Berlin have been knocked off the top of the table after being comprehensively beaten 5-0 by Bayer Leverkusen — only the second time this millennium that a Bundesliga leader has lost by such a margin. 

However, the capital club have not lost any of their last 12 home league games (nine wins, three draws) and have won the previous three in succession. 

Augsburg, meanwhile, have been beaten in their latest two Bundesliga road trips and are winless in their last six across all competitions (two draws, four defeats).

Eintracht Frankfurt vs Hoffenheim (Wednesday, 7.30pm)

Eintracht Frankfurt sit fifth, just two points off the top four — and they will be keen to keep the pressure on with a win over Hoffenheim. 

Die Adler are unbeaten in their last six Bundesliga home meetings with Wednesday's opponents and have been the division's form side since Matchday 4, picking up more wins (seven) and points (21) than any other side in that timeframe. 

Meanwhile, Andre Breitenreiter's men have mustered just one win in their last seven league outings (three draws, three defeats) — the second-worst form of any German top-flight team in that period.
