Brendan Rodgers' Celtic are yet to win a group game in the Champions League this term

- Celtic are bottom of Group E
- Atletico Madrid are in second place
- Recommended bet: Atletico to win and both teams to score

Celtic know they realistically need a win at Atletico Madrid to keep their Champions League campaign alive, but Brendan Rodgers' side are likely to be up against it in the Spanish capital.

The Hoops' chances of making the top two in Group E would not be mathematically over if they lose at the Metropolitana Stadium, but they would be facing a monumental task to progress, relying on others to help them out.

Therefore, a positive result is a must for the Scottish champions, but it may be beyond them, despite the fact they are taking on an Atletico side who went down to a shock 2-1 defeat at Las Palmas in LaLiga on Saturday.

Team news

Atleti forward Memphis Depay remains sidelined with a muscle problem, Samuel Lino is still struggling with a knee injury and Thomas Lemar's serious Achilles injury keeps him out.

For Celtic, Reo Hatate is absent with the hamstring injury he suffered early on in October's reverse fixture at Parkhead.

Stephen Welsh and Liel Abada also remain on the sidelines for Rodgers' side.

The stats

Kyogo Furuhashi has scored in his last two Champions League matches and, if he manages to notch again on Tuesday, he would become the first Celtic player to score in three consecutive European Cup or Champions League games since Joseph Craig did so in 1977.

Celtic have lost their last nine matches in Europe on Spanish soil and have managed just one win in their last 16 Champions League away games.

Atletico are a point behind leaders Feyenoord after two draws and a win in the group so far.

Apart from the earlier game in Group E, the only other competitive meetings between the two sides came in the Europa League group stage in 2011-12 when Atletico won both matches — 1-0 away and 2-0 at home.

Prediction

Celtic have, once again, struggled to compete in Europe's premier club competition and the Bhoys have managed just a solitary point from their first three games.

That did come at home to Atletico, when they bravely earned a 2-2 home draw against the Spanish giants, but getting something similar from their trip to Madrid looks too big an ask.

Atleti's surprise 2-1 defeat at Las Palmas at the weekend may give the visitors some heart, but the reality is that Rodgers' men are likely to get found out again when tackling one of Europe's most experienced outfits.

Celtic proved with their two goals at home against Tuesday's opponents that they can at least trouble Diego Simeone's side.

They have netted in eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions, so scoring has not been an issue for them.

The SPL champions can get on the scoresheet again but it may prove to be only a consolation.
