Thiago Motta has got Bologna challenging in the upper echelons of Serie A this season

In the coming weeks, the major European divisions will all slowly but surely return from their winter breaks, but there are still some great matches to enjoy across the continent this weekend.

Italy's Serie A has a full schedule on the cards, while there is also action in the Coupe de France and the Spanish Copa del Rey.

Here is a look at five teams to back across Europe this weekend.

Friday, 7.45pm

Bologna suffered a setback at the end of 2023, losing their final game of the year 3-0 away to Udinese, but they can bounce back when they host Genoa on Friday.

With eight league wins to their name this term, Bologna have emerged as serious contenders for a top-four berth in Italy, having taken down Roma and Atalanta at home in the league during December.

They also dumped Inter out of the Coppa Italia and should be confident of seeing off Genoa, who have lost six of their nine away games in Serie A.

Saturday, 5pm

Lorient have had a torrid time in Ligue 1 this season and were hammered 4-0 by Brest in their final game of 2023, but a visit to Sochaux in the Coupe de France offers them a great chance of picking up a win.

Regis Le Bris' side are in the relegation zone as it stands but opponents Sochaux ply their trade in the third tier of French football and there should be a noticeable gulf between the teams.

Lorient have recorded some decent results this season, holding Lens, Lyon, Monaco and PSG to draws, while one of their two league wins saw them hammer Lille 4-1, and they are worth a bet.

Saturday, 7.45pm

Fiorentina rounded out 2023 with three-straight wins in Serie A, beating Verona, Monza and Torino 1-0.

That has put the club from Florence in serious contention for the Champions League places and they can enhance their chances with another win over lowly Sassuolo.

Sassuolo endured a miserable December, losing four of their five matches, drawing the other with strugglers Udinese, and Fiorentina look overpriced to record maximum points.

Sunday, 1.30pm

It is the Coupe de France round of 64 this weekend and there is a cracker on the cards on Sunday when Lens take on Monaco.

Lens have been steadily recovering from a poor start to the season in Ligue 1 but are still only in seventh spot, whereas Monaco are seven points better off.

Monaco can make their mark in this cup clash, having beaten Montpellier, Rennes and Toulouse in  December.

Sunday, 9pm

The Canary Islands derby takes centre stage in Spain on Sunday as Tenerife host Las Palmas in the Copa del Rey.

These sides will not meet in the league this season with Tenerife in the Segunda Division and Las Palmas in La Liga.

And it is La Liga club Las Palmas who can show their superiority.

Las Palmas are nestled in the mid-table positions in La Liga and are a solid defensive unit, having conceded only 15 goals in their first 18 games in the league prior to their midweek meeting with Barcelona.
